Yes and No. If I didn't have a tool box my jack would be on the front rail.

IMO the ones some people are currently making/marketing with only one bolt per bracket are very dangerous. Not sure if you ever actually bent your bed rails like I have and IMO (2) bolts in them is not "secure". I also believe the less expensive 4x racks that people drill into the composite bed are dangerous unless they have a large backer plate.

Personally I have ATO's Hi Lift bracket at it is the best design I have seen to date. It has the weight spread out pretty good along (4) points and Kevin supplies superior hardware to mount in the channels. No BS nuts or any other crap modified for the rails. He supplies custom square backer brackets for them to thread into.

On top of that I have superior bed rail brackets that fully surround my bed rails so they will never bend again like they had in the past.

best clams I have ever seen for our bed rails
    BedRack006_1e4b2400115fa28c3f5cb24ab2f4ff8a112999d9.jpg

    IMO I agree with this.

Take my opinion for what it's worth. I'm not trying to start a war over facts because I have provided none. I'm pretty sure no one posting in here is from the DOT or a traffic accident investigator so none of us are professionals. I just use my life experiences and common sense to make my truck as safe as possible for myself, my passengers, and other on the road. Inertia is a bitch. I have been rear ended twice by cars going in excess of 50mph in my life. This is also why I never secure anything to the bed cleats I want to be in my bed after a trip. I have 6 D rings bolted to my frame.

I also know what forces are put on a spare tire because those forces have cracked my 3/16" tube rear bumper and spindle just from wheeling.

    phonedump039_8c18276ad11ec045b97ddc126714d71fb8295d62.jpg

I'm pretty sure if I need to gusset my bumper to handle a spare under normal use a bed rail with 2 bolts is going to be a major failure in an accident

hard to see but the 1/4" steel has cracked welds on the tube

Look at the cracks in my 3/16" bumper and you tell me...

I would not wheel like that from what I know.

so pretty much take it off and throw it back under the bed or find a more secure way to bolt it down (not to the bed rails)?

    I would.

There are a few fabricators who tie their tire carriers into the bed rails and the bed bolts that go to the frame. Most "swing gates" that drill into the steel portion of the tailgate support have cracking issues over an extended period of use.

You can also install the spare utilizing D rings you add to the bed frame bolts and a strap made for a tire. If I was on a budget and needed my spare in my bed this is the way I would go. A couple bucks for D rings and then the strap http://northridge4x4.com/store/poison-spyder-ps-3-way-spare-tire-strap-57-63-001

our trucks would require a 4 way strap not like the three way pictured

4 way strap would be best. Could criss cross 2 separate straps as long as they are "fixed" in the middle somehow and put the spare in the middle of the bed.

Macs has superb D rings but they are costly. http://www.macscustomtiedowns.com/tricks
Pretty sure they supply Robbie Gordon with his straps. They also have a neat bed rails for actual use unlike our 2nd gen ones. I have been eying up replacing my rails with theirs, but I don;t haul that much.

You could use their bed rail system in the bottom of the bed and tie it into the frame like a Titan and that would be tits....unless you haul dirt and crud that would clog the rails.

So if I got a wide strap and strapped it down using two of the frame mounted d-rings that would be plenty?along with some way to lock it up.

The third strap can't be secured to the frame without it being offset.

I'm sure with some searching you could find a 4 way strap that's not expensive.

Just found a wheel net that might work in the front with addition of 2 D rings that could keep it from flying out
    [IMG]

Just use some common sense and think out of the box and you can figure out a safe system.

passing the strap through the center of the wheel will eventually wear the strap on the center of the wheel . the flopping you speak of will wear the strap.

At one point when I was working on my bumper I had a steel cable holding down my tire and that thing flopped all over wheeling. also wore the crap out of the cable. now I know better.

if they are crossed in a "X" no portion or the strap contacts the wheel.

I also was looking for an effective & safe way to mount my full size 35" spare that would be easily removable on the fly for use of the bed...here was my solution.

    Beard Racing Y Ratchet Strap
Factory Toyota D ring with mounting base (enlarged center front drain hole & installed, used factory installed left & right side rear D-rings.)

My tire/wheel set up weighs in at 116lbs with no issues in the last 3,000 miles. Also, I moved my Hi-Lift jack from the side bedrail and installed in the front of the bed for a more secure mounting (less flex and rattle noise) w. ATO mounts positioned over the factory bedrail bolt points.
