Yardwork - FAIL

So the wifey is gone for the afternoon w/ a friend at the Crawfish Boil and I decided I'd so some yardwork.

I start by trimming some hedges w/ an electric trimmer. (I actually plugged it into the truck... kind of a big yard and it's more mobile that way.)

I've almost finished the little trimming I planned to do when BLAM!... I cut the extension cord. Nice, clean cut. It's one of those good, thick, long extension cords... and accordingly, it's the only one I own. I stand and just stare at it for about 3 minutes, pitch a little fit (throwing the newly created 2-foot cord as far as I can), then move on to mowing. No sense in wasting any more daylight, right?

I make quick work of the front yard before moving to the back. Part of my back yard is a little bumpy, and has some baseball-sized rocks here and there. I'm always careful not to hit any of them... only ocasionally grazing one now and then. Well not today... I roll right over a big one and it damn-near kills the mower. I look under the mower (after turning off, of course) and the blades (which I JUST SHARPENED TWO WEEKS AGO) are completely destroyed.

So a couple hours of a nice afternoon that should have been both productive and low-cost turned into a trip to Home Depot and $36 of unnecessarily spent money... AND I still have to spend tomorrow morning mowing the back yard.

The good news is that I only needed a new female-end to the extension cord. I went to Home Depot expecting to buy a whole new one.

 

Well, at least you didn't get hurt. I thought I would be reading about a trip to the ER when I read the title!

 

I was gunna ask you to get mine...but I'm worried the house would end up burned down or something..

I did the same thing with my hedge trimmers last weekend.

 

I did some yardwork today too! But I don't think I failed... Just put out some mulch and weeded the flowers and shrubs place.

u don't need a female end just use some wire nuts and electrical tape.

So why do you leave the baseball sized rocks in your lawn?


The first summer I lived in this house I had a spot in the grass that turned brown as soon as the weather got warm, we have lots of rocks here so i figured it was a rock.
Grabbed my pry bar and a shovel and after digging for 4 hours I had a rock the size of a wheelbarrow exposed, threw a cable around it and towed it down the hill over on the neighbors undeveloped lot

 

It's hard to explain. It's not exactly a lawn in the back... mostly tamed greenery/weeds. I clear the rocks as I find them, for the most part, but there's a part that I don't mow often. I was being a little too ambitious today.

 

Buy a goat, safer and gives you more time for playing with your truck instead of pushing a mower

 

Best way to avoid those kind of problems is have the old lady do the work while you sit in the shade drinking beer.

I thought you were going to say you killed the truck somehow as you had the cord plugged into the outlet in the bed.

 

I don't believe the crankshaft was damaged, but I'll certainly give it a feel today when I get back to work.
