I'm more worried about a corn shortage caused by drought. Corn feeds livestock, livestock feeds us and of course they can't cut back on ethanol production... Could you imagine no beef and no bacon

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Same, plus I still have half pig left in my freezer from February's butchering.
I'd be more concerned with ethanol prices than food.

I was trying not to go there because I'd go on a political rant and get this thread locked up tighter than a Vegas slot machine.

this could all be solved by getting rid of ethenol. the US produces more corn for ethenol than it does for food (for human consumption).

also why cant animals eat grass like they normally would?

Watch Food, Inc. if you havent. you will be amazed.

I have a stash of bacon just for the apocalypse. When money is useless we will start trading pork products for currency.

well, IIRC ethanol only uses about 20% of the US supply of corn. the majority is for feed, next is human consumption and then ethanol. alot of ethanol is make in brazil as well.

and cows and pigs can't get the proper nutrients and fibers from just grass feed. grains help with the quality of their meat along with helping to maintain a proper reproductive system, which is just as important as keeping the pigs you already have healthy. one of corns biggest "pro's" is that it "cleans out" animals. a corn fed animal is much less likely to be prone to disease and infection on a corn diet.

where did you pull that from? Cows have never eaten corn in nature. They are fed corn so they can fatten up quicker and be ready for the slaughter quicker.

being raised around cows, pigs and chickens along with going to an agriculture college. You're right, grains do fatten animals great and quickly for slaughter, but in today's time and demand it's the best way to do it.

I mean, it's a common knowledge in my rural area of north carolina that if you catch something wild that you want to eat, feed it corn for a few days to "clean it out"

I was curious about this, so i used the interwebs.

"Mine fed themselves on my corn patch last year. And, they did not have my permission to do so. They enjoy stalk, ear, cob, and all. "

There are a few problems with that particular study, read about it here:

    http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2...os-it-reminds-me-of-the-antivaccine-movement/

I'm not on the warpath for either side of the GMO debate, I think it's best to balance it out. Allow sales, with labels and info about how the genetics were modified? Maybe one solution.

But anyway, back to the thread: I can happily live without bacon for quite some time. Last summer was a drought too and all the farmers around Okla (where I was living then) had nothing to talk about but the dead crop in the field. It was depressing to drive around and look at it too. This year isn't any better. Worse, I guess. Ouch.

meh, our stomachs aren't even "designed" for corn. havent you ever seen it in your poop! :goingcrazy:

the article is quite bias, but does make inevitably good points no doubt. And at this point in the thread im not a really sure what we're talking about, but i will say that we don't have a future without GMO grain or grain fed livestock. should we be looking for better, "safer" ways to genetically modify corn? sure. But the fact of the matter is with the growing population, every sector of cattle, dairy, poultry and agriculture in general is going to have to expand significantly over the next 50 years to feed the world, or for anybody to even afford it.. it's not going to be possible by giving every cow and pig an acre to themselves and only feeding them grasses, or corn from a non modified low yield crop. just can't do it!
