I'm happy to report that my bushing got installed successfully today and no more humm or vibrations smooth as silk couldn't be any more happy with the outcome! On that note i have the ecgs puller for sale if anyone needs one. Just PM me!

That sounds like a wheel bearing. Depending on which way you are turning will tell you what bearing is bad, IE: if you turn right and the growl goes away, it is the right bearing that is the problem.

wheel bearings were the first parts i replaced about 5k miles ago and still
had same growl. then I heard about the ECGS fix
    so I did that.

I'm left where I started

Ok, so you replaced both front wheel bearings, driver side diff bearing, and driver side CV. Are you 100% hearing and feeling this growl from the front end? Have you pin pointed what side it is coming from? And it only makes noise when going strait? And goes away when turning? Any particular speed it starts at or ends at? What other modifications and repairs have been done to your truck?

On that note, the growl went away in 4Hi? If it didn't, then it was a waste of time changing the needle bearing.

-new hubs both sides 5k miles ago (they were wasted)
-2k miles ago new growl from front end (def front end can't pinpoint which side)
    - read this thread, checked driver cv play = excessive play
    - replaced bearing with bushing and new cv.. tightened up slop and growl has different tone but still there.

truck is stock, rugged terrain tires

Just to fully eliminate the front diff (passenger side even though it shouldn't be an issue), you should engage 4wd to see if the growl goes away. That was the true test for the front diff, not the play in the shaft.

looks like I got stuck with a shit hub. passenger side is going south.

and yes when I replaced the hubs and got the new growl it initially went away when switching to 4hi. I did that test two separate times then ordered the bushing. passenger hub must have started to take a shit soon after.

my buddy is going to exchange a new hub for the crap one, I'll report back after I replace it.

Good deal. Glad you at least got it figured out and that the bushing wasn't a waste of time and money for you.

definitely a piece of mind either way with all these stories on here. every time I see a Tacoma rolling down the road I wonder if their dealing with the front end growl and how many diff swaps theyve been through

Well Crap! After hearing this humming in the frontend after new tires and last trip wheeling it was time to research this noise, just crawled out from under the truck and the driver-side CV/Axle I can wiggle .100" plus extremely easy too, almost like its about to fall out.

265/75/16 coopers, tint. debadged, TSL rear leafs, 5100's set at 1.75, dipped wheels,
I have a similar problem with mine. billy at 1.75. if I hit a bump I hear and feel a click that resonates up through the steering wheel. My local dealership absolutely sucks and I know they would not work on my truck due to the "lift". I hate having a new truck that has had nothing but problems. May be time to get rid of the tacoma. ??

I have an 04 Tacoma that's doing the same thing. Had the cv's done but the mechanic can't seem to get the right bearing for the drivers side. Is there any special place you guys are getting them? My Tacoma has a leveling kit and the diff drop kit was not installed I'm thinking it ruined the cv and the bearing. So now I've done the cv and the diff drop the bearing is the only thing left.
