The older manuals specified 5w20 conventional oil changed at 3000 mile intervals. If you prefer that, you certainly do have that option, the engine hasn't changed.

0w20 oil is better on engine wear at startup since it pumps a lot easier, but there is no such thing as 0w20 conventional oil.

The synthetic oil is also just better in general.

Think of a conventional oil as a THIN oil with added polymers to relatively thicken it as it heats up. Those polymers get used up and you end up with a thin oil that gets REALLY thin as it heats up.

A synthetic oil is, rather, a thick oil that doesn't thicken up nearly as much as it gets cold. There are no polymers to keep it thick, so the viscosity of the oil remains consistent forever. This is the primary reason why synthetic oils support extended change intervals.

Personally, I change my oil on 10,000 km intervals with full synthetic 0w20. That is 6250 miles. I do this because the maintenance schedule is definitely conservative, and its a much easier number to remember and observe.

I don't think a V6, or even one with a S/C will help much under those circumstances.... or it might help a little if your motivation in life is to win a Darwin award. :D

BTW: this is an old thread you brought back.

Someone must have voted on it because I never went looking for this thread again, therefore not me who brought it back.

There is a lot of great advice on here to go either way, but with a six, you're spreading that wear and tear over more cubic inches.

If you're suggesting that the engine will last longer on a V6... possible, however, the I4 is so well built that wearing it out is not an important consideration.

And actually, there are a lot more failures reported with respect to the current V6 than the current I4, FWIW.

get the v6. Only poor people who can't afford the extra cost for the V6 and gas should get the I4.

That is the most fucked up statement I have ever read here ... sorry if I offended anyone ... I will match my Navy retirement, portfolio, and future City of Virginia Beach Public Schools retirement against any (that would be you Hans) V6 owner.

You buy the truck you need ... not the truck that you think your buddies think you need ... peer pressure sure can put a dent into one's thought process.

    Stepping down off soapbox now.

the extra mileage isnt worth it. especially in the 4x4 version. 2 extra mpgs isnt worth having no power

Some people with the v6 record 15 mpg, I get 23 with the 4x4 set up i4 engine. I'd say that worth it and I have plenty of power and it will last

theres also people that report 21mpg with the 4.0 and 17-18 with the 4cyl. ive never gotten as low as 15 even towing my 84 yota around. its all about driving habits and mods (and the ability to calculate mileage that many people lack), im just saying an apples for apples comparison, its about a 2mpg difference

Comes down to personal preference. I had a V8 Silverado but didn't need the power so I bought 4 cyl and I'm perfectly content with it. However, I do take issue with people saying those that buy the 4cyl do so because they can't afford the V6. With only $1000 difference between upgrading, I'm pretty sure someone who's already laying out $24,000 for a truck could spare the extra expense if they wanted to. But,for the people that suggest that those who bought a 4 cyl Tacoma did so because they were poor, I say screw off.

So you have done studies and taken a nation wide poll and can comparison? It's not apples to apples considering they are different engines. V6 engines may be more powerful but when it comes down to what these trucks are meant for its not really that important. If I had anything to tow I wouldn't even buy the v6 Tacoma I'd get something made to tow, the 4 cyl is plenty of around town/highway power and going on trails and stuff like that.

Agreed. If I wanted "power" I would buy a v8 Tundra. With mods and good driving habits you will probably get as good of mileage as a v6.

I had to special order my 4 sr5 AC. It wasn't a matter of gas for me but testing the 6 speed and skipping gears wasn't fun. To each their own and buy what you need. Get past 3k rpm with the 4 and it has plenty of go.

It seems like a lot of folks pick a bigger motor just for the sake of having a bigger motor. My 2.7l 5sp Prerunner access cab has never had any trouble passing people and can cruise 85 mph all day long if needed. It gets 4-5 mpg more than the 6 cyl, which means about 85 to 100 more miles with EVERY fill up.

It will tow my 2000 pound camper like it's not there, plus you get the reliability, longevity, and low maintenance cost of the proven I4.

Unless I want to pound my chest like macho man, why exactly do I need a V6? Buying more than you need is just wasteful.

The only advantage I believe is the i4 uses a timing chain that lasts longer then the v6 timing belt. Correct me if I'm wrong.
