CB Antenna type for Hood Mounting

How's the performance of the wilson 1000? You mentioned you had bashed it around, so it sounds pretty durable.
Do you just leave it on all the time? I would probably take it off occasionally, especially since I use the drive-through car washes.
Since I don't have a 3rd brake light I would have to find something else, but I'm sure there's a way.
Do you know off-hand of any write-ups for the hard-mount?

 

Performance is excellent. I have yet to knock it off and I've hit it pretty hard around town and off road. They make a mag mount version and solid mount version which you would have to drill a hole in your roof for. The beauty of the mag mount is you just plop it on the roof and you're pretty much good to go. No need for grounds or mounts. You can also take it off when need be.

 

How about paint scuffs and scratches from the magnet? I read somewhere that some have a rubber pad, but that sounds like it would prevent any grounding, unless the magnet itself is the ground.

 

Here's the gap between cab and shell...no 3rd brake light. I could secure the cable to the gap around the rear window and run it down following the tan wire in the picture, though, but I don't know what I would do if I wanted to take it down...


Here's the top of the truck. The Relentless fab CB mount would not work here because there's a vented piece of metal between the end of the hood and the windshield, unlike in the 2nd gens where the plastic vents are below the surface of the hood.

 

There is a pad to protect your paint. It will get scuffed some though. Just make sure the paint is clean as well as the magnet when you put it on. If you need to take it off you can unscrew the base with the antenna attached and leave the magnet and coax in place. I think they make a cap to to go on there when the antenna is removed. They also make a Little Wil, which is a smaller version of the 1000. Performance isn't as good but it's a little more low profile.

 

Not scuffed to the metal, though, right? I imagine it would get scuffed like branches scuff your paint when you drive on an overgrown trail.

Do you or anyone else know if wilson still makes the cap? I've seen it listed in various online stores but each listing says out of stock, so I went to the wilson website and it didn't have anything.

 

I think it comes with the cap. I bought mine used so I never had one.

 

It's not listed as included with the antenna from Right Channel radios, but who knows. I'll find out when I end up getting it.
With school starting to heat up now I probably won't be getting it for a little while, though.

Just finished installing everything today. Back when I started this thread my parents said to wait until after dec. 25th, so they gave me the radio and antenna for christmas.
The install was pretty easy, I just took out my ash tray and cut out the plastic in the back and glued some velcro to the top of the radio and it's so snug that it just sits right in there. Then I went to tune the antenna and the readings were already so low that I didn't even bother with any antenna adjustments. I think channel 1 was 1.15 and channel 40 was less than 1.1. I think we can safely say that the wilson 1000 needs little to no tuning, but it's nice to know the actual SWR readings.

Oh and the antenna came with the weather cap so I didn't have to buy it separately.

You could use this to fold antenna down between the cab and shell. This is what I use to keep antenna down behind cab so it doesn't bang on garage door opening and or limbs if offroading.

I don't think that works with the wilson antenna. I'll just take it off if I need to go into a low place because it's easy enough to unscrew, and I hear it's pretty durable in terms of hitting limbs. I might look into getting one of those fold over latches that just holds the antenna down if it hits a lot of stuff on the trail.

 

i have a matchmaker that will let you use the CB antenna for your AM/FM antenna as well if you are interested!

im not gonna use it, and since you guys were talking about mounting the antenna on the hood... i figured you may be interested in eliminating one of the antennas.

Thanks, but no thanks. The antenna is mounted on the roof, so it's out of sight. My stock antenna works amazingly anyways (one of the many things that were better on the older trucks ), so I'll just leave all that as is.

Haha, alright alright I'll get some up this weekend after I go on a wheeling trip with my buddy. That'll be the first official test, too!

Oh and goddamn, the radio I got looks like it belongs in the ash tray spot in the dash. Sooo freakin' amazing!
After reading some other threads on CB installs, the wilson was sooooooo easy it was ridiculous. I like it, but the location isn't for everyone, but for anyone out there looking for an easy set up, definitely seriously consider the Wilson 1000.
