Extra tailgate security (not the clamp)

In addition to the hoseclamp method I added 2 cable locks to each side of my tailgate. This adds two more points to go through if a thief really wants your tailgate. I used 3/32 galvanized rubber coated cable with two of the 3/16 cable bolt down locks. I believe total cost to me was under 2 dollars. The bolt down locks attatch the looped ends together and if you crank them down pretty good they will hold and are a bitch to get undone in such a small space....with not much slack in the cable. Make sure the cable is coated with the thick clear rubber as not to scratch the paint or cause rusting later.

I tried to cut the cable with standard wire cutters and it did not work and it took me about 5 minutes to cut it with a hacksaw blade. Not foolproof by no means however just a little more for a thief to go through. This works well and does not bind at all when I shut my gate. I attatched the cable to the tailgate hinges and then through the tie down hooks on my bed....not sure if other 2nd gens have these but mine did and they are a star bolt pattern....pics below.

The cable was 34 cents per foot and I got a 2 foot section with the cable locks at 54 cents each. Lowes had all of it as well as the hose clamp I also just installed.

 

Great idea, I used the hose clamp and than installed a large washer over the keyhole shape on the support cable. Thief would need a torx key to remove.

I got the idea after realizing adding a second hose clamp to the drivers side did nothing to prevent that side from being lifted. I figured that by making both sides hard to remove could only help.

You may be able to use a larger cable however from what I can see the size I used fits well after the tailgate is closed. The small loop folds into the space between the gate and body and should cause zero damage or obstruction. The smaller you can make the loop the better it should secure.

I agree the handcuffs would have been a nice touch however my opinion for the best security option on my tailgate is a lock known simply as the H&K 40 Cal. USP.....

I got mine at a bicycle supply shop. Looked at each end and the come in various lingths. Also available at Home Depot, Lowe’s. And Walmart.
