I got the ones from the dealer. I forget how much they cost but I don't think it was too bad..

A year after installation they are still stuck on good. I didn't even use the prepping alcohol that it came with...just cleaned the area with a rag and stuck 'um on. :D

I got these in the mail yesterday. Any tips for removing the door sill cover? I do not have the removal tool they are talking about- do I really need it? Also, do I really need a felt squeegee like they reference, or can I use something else like a credit card or book edge to set the decal? Would it be a good idea to wet the surface with some water like applying a bedside decal so that I can have a bit of movement if necessary?

A heat gun will help loosen the glue. Work it from one end slowly pulling up as you apply heat.

I am asking for tips on removing the plastic cover- should I just stick a screw driver in their and start gently prying? How is it affixed? Surely it is not glued on there, so I don't think a heat gun will be beneficial for the cover's removal. I need to remove the cover so that I can install the protectors.

You don't even need a screw driver, just your fingers. Pull straight up on one end and work your way towards the other. Here is a picture of what you are up against (if you have an access cab or others are similar), each circle is a place where it attached to the door sill; the two red arrows show one tab and it's corresponding clip.

I'm going with something a little different for door sill scratch protection. I'm running a long strip of clear vinyl along the entire door sill, front to back and from under the trim to about an inch down the rocker (ie outside the door). For the most part you can't see a damn thing...which is the point, but it makes for bad pictures. In the picture I posted above you can see I had the factory door sill protectors, I've peeled those off to put down the clear vinyl but may apply new adhesive to them and put them back down on top of the vinyl.....not sure yet. Here's a picture of most of the drivers side, at the very front you can see the edge of the vinyl:

A close up of the front edge:

And a close up of the rear edge:

This stuff is not easy to work with, you need patience, a willingness to scrap it and start over, more patience and a heat gun. But I think it's well worth it.

After reading this thread, I decided to do a home-made type mod for this to prevent scratches on the door sill. I did not want to pay a lot and figured it would give me something to do.

I searched all over for "vinyl grip tape": Wal-Mart, Northern Tool, Home Depot, Lowes, etc... All I found was the sandpaper like type grip tape, like on skateboards. This would be good, but I didn't want it rubbing on the rubber door seal over time. I wanted something less abrasive...

Then i got the bright idea :D- a boating supply store!! Lo and behold, I found a vinyl type grip tape that has a textured surface, but not sandpaper like which would do the trick. West Marine had it in a roll 2" wide and for like $16. It is enough to do 2 access cab trucks...

I measured and cut to strips for each side as shown in the picture. Then I used the pictured can can to round the edges and cut. Alcohol prep and dry and stuck it on. Of course, I did this right before the pictures that show how to remove the sill were posted so i put mine on without removing the plastic sill and there are small gaps that show as you can see in the pic. Not enough for me to redo now, but before I trade the truck in for a 3rd gen in 5-6 years I will redo.

For those using the AVS sill protectors, since they don't seem to make them for the regular cab, would the access cab or double cab version work better with a regular cab?

Here is what you are trying to avoid. My 2006 door sill at 297k miles today. After this pic I hit it with some primer and will hit it with Duplicolor after the body shop wanted $250 to spray it.

I am going to apply the Toyota sill protectors going forward.

Stepshields from AutoVentshade Co. $21.60 for all four pieces from TRDparts4U. Part # 00012-A0596-03

they wrap over the sill edge. and come with double sided tape already applied. even comes with alchol wipes to prep the area before install.

I don't think I do. more pics on TRDparts4U site.

for 21bux you can't beat them. and they fit like a glove. the pattern in the plastic even matches the Tacoma plastic sill cover.

you just have to take your time on the install.
