I went to Discount Tire today to install my 255/85's and the rep told me that he is required to install TPMS on the rims because it's a DOT safety thing. He wanted to charge me $50 per sensor. I was gonna get some off ebay but wanted to make sure 05+ sensors will work on 1st gen rims.

Sounds fishy and a way to get you to pay more. I have never heard it being a requirement other than being required when the vehicle was built.

That's what I thought. I already had them price match the cheapest tire on the interwebz. And I think he was trying to make some money back.

The last set of tires they gave me the option to rebuild. This time he said they have to rebuild or replace since I was keeping my current rims/tires. C'mon. GTFOH.

    So I walked out.

Rebuilding the tpms is normally a good idea, replacing the rubber grommet, nylon washer and the valve core, all the parts that can wear with time and use. If you dont want the tpms function you dont need the tpms sensors.

I'm pretty certain that if they are not legally obligated (which I believe they are legally obligated), they are obligated by the liability on their insurance policy. You might want to ask if you can sign a waiver for removing the sensors.

With that said, TPMS sensors should fit just fine in alloy wheels from a first gen Tacoma.

Are you just changing tires or rims and tires? If you're changing both, have them mount the tires on the rims and bolt them up yourself.

On another note, how do I disable the tpms light on my dash without having the sensors.
