Knock Sensor Replacement

Well guys,

I had a nice surprise this weekend. I had my buddy (who works at a dealer) bring out the instructions from alldatapro.com. Once I saw that you have to remove the cylinder heads and just said F* it I'm not doing that. I was just about to put it back together and go trade it in for a Tundra when my buddy shows me the knock sensor in his hand!!! I was like "WTF"!!

He was actually able to get a 13mm end wrench between the engine and that water pipe and remove the sensor. I don't think that you could access the passenger side sensor but if it is bank 2?? (I think)....driver's side....then you don't need to remove much to get down there. Lucky for me the mouse chewed off the wire right flush with the sensor. I was able to take an aluminum tig rod and hook onto the wires remaining and pull them up. You can see here that they are up and I've got them stripped and ready for soldering. I have to buy a new connector because there aren't any wires left there but all should be good to go shortly.

 

So I've been to all the local junkyards/wrecking yards and cannot come up with a pigtail that connects to the knock sensor. Toyota wants me to buy a complete wiring harness!!

Anybody know how to get a connector? Or a cross reference? I only need a couple inches of wire on the other end.

 

Nevermind, they are easy to take apart (small pick needed), now I get to test my soldering skills

Wow, what are the chances..I love the iternet.

My wifes 2007 Sequoia got a pack rat lat night, chewed some sh!t up, threw the knock sensor code. Really not back to get to, just removed the plenum.

I do have a question about getting the 2 metal blades out of the plastic connector so I can recrimp them. Do I need a special tool or will a small screw driver or a dentisit pick work. Also, once the are out are the easliy recrimpable or should I try to get new ones.

It was Covered under Comprehensive had to pay 500 deductible. I have USAA.

no problem. Lucky the knocking sensor went bad in the winter.

 

Mine is throwing the code, but no performance issues.

How did USAA handle the claim???? Did they have an adjustor come out and inspect it????

 

From what i remember cause it happen awhile ago. I took the truck in and called USAA. They said they would cover it as long as i paid my deductible.

Might help someone, but you don't need to unbolt the sensor. I was able to just unplug it and solder in a new wire. Stupid mice.

 

agree ^ those bastards cost me alot of money.

 

My Tacoma just threw a P0327 code this morning. Just like that it wouldn't shift from 4th gear into 5th. Sure hope I don't have to replace one of those knock sensors. My truck was almost empty so I filled it up with gas and cleared the code with my ScanGauge. 10 miles later it hasn't come back.

My 07 is giving me.this code. I am literally working on my truck as I type this.

Can some on please tell me where exactly is this sensor??? Pictures will be great. THe ones here do not tell me much.

Code is P0333, knock sensor 2, circuit high input, bank 2.

This was so long ago I really can't remember. You have to disconnect that wiring loom from the throttle body and I also recall removing it at the connection to the spark plugs. The throttle body itself has to come off. That entire black intake manifold/plenum has to come off and with it a number of those vacuum/pressure lines attached to it. You've got a little ways to go. Sorry I'm not much help but I really can't recall step by step instructions. Good luck

 

I had a P0333 code come up on my 2013 limited yesterday. It was around 9pm when the code came up, it was dark outside, and I pulled the easy stuff off and could not find any evidence of mice/chipmunks. I also couldn't pull the upper-end of the engine apart, I had to get to work.

No noticed loss of power while driving, TRAC was disabled and the check engine light on.

I was also going into the dealership to get my 45k service done anyways.

I brought it in to the dealership, my mechanic pulled what I didn't have time to. He found the 2nd bank knock sensor wires chewed/severed by animals. I was able to grab a quick picture, its not the best, maybe a little fuzzy. 5 hours of dealership labor and a rental car for a day so far.

Any more labor/replacing the sensors ($160+ each) and $500 insurance deductible may be the way to go on this.

I opted to replace the short section of the wiring harness (Toyota 82219-08010, approx $36-50 depending on where you buy it) versus pulling the rest of the heads and replacing both knock sensors. Hopefully it works out.

Moral of the story is.... mice/chipmunks suck. I'll verify the part numbers and prices tomorrow when I pick taco up.
