If you're thinking about running your dog, consider waiting until his joints are ready for that. Some vets say it takes at least until their first birthday for this to happen. Until they're ready, the idea is to limit the amount of running to chasing the ball/play.

Otherwise, there's a risk of joint damage. I waited until Riley was a year or so before letting him really run. And still, I worry about elbow/joint problems

    Banjo's an awesome looking pup!

    Thanks :)

Thanks for the info. We have a big park a block from our house that we will spend a lot of time at. When we start running him we will probably take him out to the local offroad trails. I read that running them too much on pavement can damage their pads.

Check these out. I use these on my pup for our long runs or when we go to Mammoth for snowshoeing.

Wait until he's about 9 months or so to make sure the feet are sized right. These boots have saved my boy's feet many times.

You do have to watch their pads but at a young age, you're more concerned with joint damage that's caused by running (and jumping) on under developed joints. Your vet could probably explain it better (as far as what happens).

Riley cuts has cut a pad. Hasn't been a big deal but then again, he doesn't run on paths that have a great deal of stone on them (like the booties page shows--I hear they work well in the snow).

This is an article with a really "downer" tone but has a little more info:

    http://ezinearticles.com/?Forced-Ex...erious-Injury-and-Permanent-Damage&id=6438960

My red dog has pink/tan pads which some people think are more prone to ripping than the black paw pads. He will literally shred thick pieces off his paws, hocks, and stopper pads while playing fetch on hard packed dirt or pavement and then leave blood everywhere, limp for a couple days (unless there's a tennis ball of course, then it's on, no limp). Same in the snow-- bloody tracks. So booties (I buy Muttluks brand) and also some paw wax for the snow, and just the paw wax for our city runs, and that works really well plus the wax is cheap. He's 7 now and ~70 lbs-- I've had him on GlycoFlex the last few years, seems to work well and he's still running a few miles 3x a week with me and hiking.

Mental exercise (we started doing fun nosework a couple years back which is getting really popular all over, same with treibball) is key too for the smart sometimes edgy herders. Aw man. Now I kinda want a puppy. lol

:D It's a running joke that everyone calls our dogs Toto when they're Scotties and really look nothing like Toto (a brown Carin terrier). Nice of you to rescue a pup! Both of ours came from a family breeder who breeds only Scotties, and has been doing it for over 20 years. No puppy mill support from me.

    And thanks for your service.

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
My mom used to raise scotties. Little yapping devils... She bred them for a few years, just one litter a year or so. She still has the two older ones.

Darn...I lost the bet with my wife. She said it was a scotty and I said I didn't think so with the color. Same family though. I've heard Scotty's are more a one person dog and extremely loyal. Our Cairns is Brown in color and you can get a wheat color too. I bet your little person is a lover....;)
