Replacing OEM Tires

I saw via a search there are what appears to be an endless number of posts regarding tires. My current OEM tires have about 40K miles on them, but will more than likely need to be replaced before this year is out. So far, I have been happy with the tires from the factory but would like to know what others have used for replacement. My truck is a 2005 Double Cab Sport that's completly factory other than after market floor mats and a baby seat in the back. The truck serves as my daily driver and therefore I'm not looking for anything extreme. I have used BFG AT KOs on my previous Chevy ZR2 truck which wear well, but of course are not as forgiving in daily driving.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Otherwise my intent would be to look over at Tirerack to see what others have used and rated. I included some original pictures of the truck when I purchased it. As previously mentioned, not much has changed since then other normal wear and tear.

 

Hey! My truck is also my daily driver but I like to hit some trails a few times a month. I am planning on replacing my stock tires with nitto Terra grapplers. they are not horribly expensive, perform well on and off road, and most importantly they are pretty light. To me they seem to be the best compromise for a daily driver yet trail capable truck

I have the stock Dunlop AT20's off my '09 sport. P265/65R17. I lifted my truck recently, bought larger tires and have the stockers for sale if you're interested. Only 4,000 miles on them. Asking $350. I'm in Connecticut. Not sure how far west in PA you are but if you're east, we could meet half way.

 

If somehow you liked the OEM Dunlop tires,you'll absolutely love Michelin LTX A/T2's.

Ride quality is outstanding.Road noise is excellent and these tires have low rolling resistance.

I bought some 10 ply tires for my truck recently. I do allot of towing so I can air them to 80 psi max if needed. They have one hell of a tread pattern on them. They were 600.00 installed. They are a very quiet tire as well.

 

If it's just your daily driver and no trails I recommend getting some standard high mileage highway tires. No point in spending the extra cash for traction/puncture resistance if you don't need it.

 

Tempting, but I won't need tires until the fall at the earliest. I'm actually in Harrisburg PA which is a bit of a haul given your location. If you still have the tires come October time let me know.

 

Right, which is sort of my view as well. Although, I always like the way the BFG AT KOs looked but presume they would change the ride quality and more than likely reduce MPG.

 

I always found Michelin to be the most expensive of brands and typically not worth the extra coin. However, I will take a peak at the reviews on the one you suggest above and see what verdict others have given.

 

Good to know and another option I will have to research.

wow you got 40k out of the stock tires? must be a lot of freeway. I had 2 flats in like 1 year and they were bald at 12k.( i have dirtbikes and the truck goes where the bikes goes) since ive had 2 sets of bfg a/t's and i LOVE THEM...i dont have to worry about them, the stock tires every time i went off the road i had to plan enough time to put the spare on cause most likely theyd get a flat.bfgs do drive different and are a little noisy but ive not once had a flat or anything and i drive it like its a trophy truck in the dirt. worth the money!! for the piece of mind

 

I just put Michelin Cross Terrains on my 2009 Sport. It also is my daily driver, I put about 40-45 miles a day. So far they are great.

 

How many miles did you get out of the BFGs each time? Were they AT?

 

What all new Tacomas have is Bridgestone H/T Duelers.(or D/T). I would recommend you get a tire such as General Grabbers.... I have my own thread in the wheels and Tires Section of TW. Go take a look. There are a bunch of different tires that some people have recommended.

 

Actually, I still have the stock tires and they should be good until the fall at this point. I'm beginning to think I got lucky here or did Toyota change the tires since 2005? My driving is a mix of city/highway but I have taken some long trips to NY a few times on the OEM tires which may have helped extend the life? I fell your pain with only 12K on the OEM tires. My wife's Camry only managed to squeeze out 20K from the OEM tires! I also had good past experiences with the BFGs AT tires and hence why I will consider them again.
