In my 2004 tacoma trd v6, my 4 low is not working at all...

From my understanding to put it in 4 low i first shift to neutral, then push the 4WD stick all the way forward then put it in drive and go on my way.

But for me when i put it in neutral and push the 4WD all the way forward i can hear it engage but when I shift into drive it dosnt move at all, its as if its in neutral. And when I put it back in neutral and pull the stick all the way back to put it back into 2 HI it always grinds a little bit. My 4 high works fine though. I just changed the oil to the transfer case and I found just the tip of a gear tooth in it, a small portion of one. What do you think could be the problem?

You need to pull down then push to the right then push all the way forward. While in neutral

I guess i just dont understand what your saying then because my dads tacoma is the 2002 v6 auto and i wanted to try and see how it is in his and all i have to do to engage the 4 LOW in his is to be in neutral and push it all the way forward and it works right away. His isn the TRD package and mine is would that make any difference at all?

    A few bolts are different.
buzzard, I believe the op has the push button 4wd hi, you have the "J" patter shifter? If that is the case...

op- you need to make sure your truck in ih 4hi first. Then shift to neutral and shift t-case into 4lo.

I found a different transfer case with only 27000 miles on it on craigslist for only $100 and its a complete case gears and all.. Should i just get it and swap mine out and see if that fixes it? Is it a hard job to change the transfer case?

I wouldn't until you get it back and read on how to work the truck.
Check on buzzards info and then go try. If you think it's in 4 low and it don't go anywhere and you pull it back and grinds it means the transfer case was in neut
    Wait and try it again.

All those ideas about pushing it to the left or putting it in 4HI first before 4LOW all those ideas arent making sense... My dads tacoma is pretty much exactly the same and all i have to do to engage 4LOW is neutral and push stick forward thats it..unless my transfer case is different then his shouldnt it be the same for me?? Anyways i just picked up the new case from craigslist with 27000 on it.. Only $100 so i guess ill swap it and see what happens. Anything you guys sugguest i do before i tear in?

Do you have a push button on your 4x4 shifter? If you do then just put truck in neutral then push forward. If you don't use The J method

Ya i have the push button one, the truck is automatic and its 2004. But i already tried that the truck dosnt move.. And when i pull the stick back to put it in 2HI if i dont do it quck it will grind, is that normal? Even on my dads tacoma you gotta do it quick or else it grinds. Wats up with that?
