I can't find where my wife put my owner's manual but I figured I could get a quick response on here. I was wondering which (if any) driving aids should be turned off when going off road? Won't be anything crazy, this will be the first time I've ever gone off road. It's a stock 2012 TRD Sport 4x4.

    It. Depends.

I recommend researching thoroughly what they all do and deciding for yourself when you want them on or off.
Many of them are both beneficial and problematic depending on the type of terrain.

I'm starting to get a better feel for what works well and when, but shit's somewhat complicated.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
As soon as you engage it into 4 low, it turns off a bunch of things, all the lights will come on in the dash. I am assuming those are all the things ya need off, don't know of any other way to turn them off either.

JAndrews posted this excellent summary on another forum (post #3):
    It's worth a read.

I'm sure glad I'm not learning how to wheel with all this stuff. The rigs I learned in didn't even have shoulder harnesses :D

Not necessarily. Plenty of times lockers are essential in sand, and they can be helpful in other items.

The key tends to be wheelspeed vs. not. Because of the ABS modulation of wheelspin, these electronic traction aids *rarely* help when what you really need is two tires spinning rather than two tires herking. Two spinning tires are both pushing. Jerking tires, one's pushing and the other's stopping, and you ain't goin' anywhere.

The electronic stuff does its best work in situations where one wheel is low traction and the other is not.

If everything is low traction, better to lock the ass, leave the front open, and key up the throttle. Momentum FTW.

Depending on the terrain you might want to hit the RSCA OFF switch.

This is what i was thinking too, aside from all the electronic traction control stuff. I usually turn that off as soon as i get on the trail.

We don't need no stinkin driver aids...
Turn of RSCA as soon as you hit the dirt, rollover control for idiots, no good off road.
The rest, just play around and find what's working best for that terain.

Hit the dirt, hold the Trac-Control button for 3 seconds at a dead stop, keep it in derprunner mode, shift down to 2, and mash the go-pedal out of a turn while moving the steering wheel from 10:00 to 2:00. You'll understand once you try it.
