I've got a Yakima rack on my ARE shell- I used the tracks instead of the artificial rain gutters to give more versatility. I've also got a couple of bike carriers including a frame clamp style and a fork style; the fork clamp is much easier to use on top of a truck since its mechanism is lower. At 5'10" there's no way I can reach the frame clamp without stepping on a small ladder (you can find small three-step ladders at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.) or at least a milk crate. With the 60" bars (gets the bike outboard of the shell) and the fork clamp mounted towards the outside I can actually swing the bike into it and clamp it without much effort.

If you go with the Yakima or Thule tracks follow the mounting instructions and don't overdo it on the silicon. Mine's been on for six years now and still no leaks.

I am 5'10 also, so we're in the same "boat". I was going to just get the Yakima rails preinstalled from ARE. Would you recommend I install myself to make sure it is properly sealed?

Solution? Store bikes beside the cap. Check softopper.com for details

I love the idea, but don't like Softtoppers. Does anyone make something like that for ARE or LEER toppers?
