Sorry I have read many posts here put I can't get a straight answer. What are most drivers getting MPG. On a 4 cyl. do you increase if you upgrade the air filter and/or remove the charcoal filter. I know many will come back with the " I didn't buy it for gas miles" but I would like to see a little bit better. I have a 2012 PreRunner 6 lug, 4 cyl., 2WD access cab. I run 3 PSI extra in the tires, have a bed cover and keep the RPM under 2500 but I can not get over 20.5 MPG highway using 87 reg gas. This seems low to me. Is it ??? Dealer told me it should get better in time........

    Be Safe JIM

I think 5 luggers are getting about 25 mpg but I could be wrong. I am getting 16.8 mpg in my DC 4x4. :( I wish I was getting the 20 mpg u are getting.

I thin ~25 mpg is about right too. I have the exact same truck as you only 4x4 and have a 20.9 mpg average. I would think yours is a little low but there are a lot of variables from even one truck to another of the same model.

That will improve. What is your total mileage? I noticed mine suddenly get a whole lot better as soon as I did some major hard work with it, that really forced it into its grove. I get about 22-23 with a 50/50 mix highway/city (with the added weight of 4x4), and about 26 when running the highway. The 5-lugs have no problem breaking over 30.

Ignore anyone who yaps about "not buying a truck for mileage". I certainly bought mine for the mileage. The alternative was to keep the truck I had and get 15 highway. EVERYBODY who "didn't buy it for mileage" bought the 6-cyl and hates the mileage, so they just say that to make themselves feel better ;-)

Time will improve MPG like most everyone here says. If your driving for MPGs on your Taco, the 4 banger's sweetspot is around 60-65mph. Air filter increase is barely noticeable but if again if your driving for MPG's, you will notice 1-2 but most of the time barely.

I drive with a lead foot on mine and go around 75+mph/2500RPM+ on the highway/interstate and average about 20.7 MPG which isn't bad but I def. could do better. I've gotten around 23 city and 30 highway before but I was really trying.

I have been getting right at 22 MPG on my 2012 DCSB sr5 prerunner 2.7. All I have done so far is remove the charcoal filter, but I did that about 3 days after I had the truck.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
As the engine breaks in and loosens up with time and mileage it will get better. I recommend running premium fuel in your truck. I do it with mine and it is a 4x4 and I consistently get between 20-24 with it mixed highway and city. Sure it costs a bit more, but not only boosts the mileage, it helps it run better and start easier.

Actually, it will DECREASE mileage, make it run bad, and make it harder to start.
87 max, unless you have a high compression engine, which the 2TR-FE is NOT.

My questin is how much do tires effect it on a 2.7. I want 235/85 duratrac tires when I get my taco they are thin but are also heavy. I wonder what the best combo is for a weekend warrior truck.

Heavy tires will affect city driving mileage, not highway.
Also note that 235/85R16 are slightly taller than stock.

I thought I would get better, but I have ranged from 19.5-22.5 in the last 4 yrs, but overall 19.5-21 max is my norm. But I do a lot of short trips around town, stop and go, a/c always on, etc. Freeway, always running 70 +. :(

You've also got some bro-lean and bigger wheels. The bigger wheels by themselves may be MASKING your true mileage, making your reading of 22.5 correspond to a REAL mileage of 23.265.

Multiply readings by 1.034 to correct for tire size, and if you slow down a bit, your mileage will go up considerably.

On my 2012 DC four banger i get about 18-20 mpg around town depending on my driving. And highway, like long trips i would get 23mpg. I am on 87.
