My failure wasn't Trex , it was a GAF ELK composite decking

My Trex deck is fine. I used treated on 12 inch C for the frame. No problem. Don't know anything about GAF.

Bahaha, I'm a construction contractor. I don't work on my house. I get enough of that mess at work. Stuff just sits around here until I HAVE to do something about it. Come to think of it, I need to rehang the gutter. And reshingle the roof. And re-caulk the windows. And replace that broken window, for that matter. And figure out why the washer and fridge are leaking water all over the floor. And more stuff. I just don't wanna do any of it. :p

Trust me, when you do this crap for a living, you don't want to do it at home.

Where I am , long length ( 16-20' ) clear Western Red Cedar 2x6" is cheaper than composite garbage bags and sawdust .

    Never again

Western Red Cedar sounds nice - never thought of that as an option but then I live in NJ and most people use treated southern pine - drys and splits like crazy - discolors and looks terrible after a few years.

I'm a plumber and I'm doing everything but plumbing around my house. I gutted my house before moving in. After 10 years plumbing is good except for kitchen faucet spout. The whole faucet spins instead of spout. Been like that for years:)

lol that's funny because it's a 30 second fix. My buddy is a GC and he has decided since selling his last house that he's going to rent for a while so he doesn't have to deal with fixing things.

My dad is a GC in Sask, and an Elk composite deck he did for one of his customers also failed. I believe the company(Elk) wrote the homeowner a cheque for the cost of a new deck including materials and labour

They weaseled out of the labour and removal / disposal on this deck because the warranty claim was one month outside of their coverage time on labour .

That means my client received a $5500 cheque for a job that will cost him close to $20K to correct .

There are 4 identical failures of this product in my small area , all occuring within 6 months of each other , about 1 year - year and a half after install .

This deck that failed was a lake front cottage. It was build on 30' deep piles. The deck boards warped and twisted so much that it broke all the welds on the aluminum railing.

He has also had a number of trex decks that faded more then what is acceptable . One of them was a 45K deck, and the trex that showed up must have been from two different batches because about half the boards faded to a different colour.

When I build my deck next spring I will probably use cedar.

The problem with our deck is that it expanded in all direction as composites do , but it expanded , and expanded , and expanded , and expanded , and never contracted .

The joints at the ends of the boards that were gapped 3/16" as per spec tightened up and then started pushing on each other , literally jacking the deck framing off of the structure and pulling the welded railings out of the posts .

I would not have believed it if I didn't see it with my own eyes .
