Swapping 2012 Entune Subwoofer for ED e3.8

Seeing that the elemental designs e3.8 is a great performing subwoofer, I had the idea of trying to swap the current JBL subwoofer that comes in the Entune package (double cab) for the e3.8. It would be great to use the same enclosure and the factory amp for a quick, small, and cheap upgrade that might not need modification to any of the factory material.

I'm happy with the Entune package as a whole, but I find the quality of the sub to be the weakest link, so I'm curious to see how this would work.

Has anyone tried this? Or, does anyone have access to the entune subwoofer/amp enclosure to take some measurements and see if the e3.8 would fit without heavy modification? Specifically, it would depend on the cutout diameter and the mounting depth. I'm willing to be the guinea pig if someone can take some quick measurements for me.

If feel the same way about the subwoofer and would like to do this as well. Do you notice a distortion when you are using the Bluetooth? Like a fuzzy sound in the tweeters when the person is talking. Other than those two things, this is the best factory sound system I've had so far.

 

I do not know of anyone that has swapped out subs but I want to do this as well. I am tempted to buy someone's OEM enclosure and swap subs in that as opposed to tearing into mine.

 

You can't just swap it out, and if you did, it will sound absolutely no different. There is hardly any power driving the sub in that amp. You gotta get rid or wire it seperately.

 

Sub swaps in 8th gen Accords were an improvement and there was not alot of wattage being pushed through the OEM sub. The key is picking the right sub. I think there would be an improvement.

 

IF you could, lets just say its more work than its worth. You're just polishing a turd in the end.










Which reminds me of my first upgrade to my JBL system. OP, look into a new head unit. A new head unit will give you more control over the bass, instead of flattening the EQ curve like the stock head unit will.

 

really, I'd be happy if the factory sub had an eq and separate volume control without having to turn the bass down on the HU eq.

 

45 watts per coil is 90 watts total. That's plenty of power as long as you know what you're doing.

Truth be told, you need to get a more efficient speaker to make use of the limited power. I would guess the stock sub has some decent efficiency but it isn't all that high. The ed 3.8 is a great sub (I run two of them) but it's not terribly efficient. It could very well be a step back because you'll run out of power before you'll run out of woofer xmax (cone throw).

Something like a guitar bass cab speaker would be best. Crazy efficient and will JAM on 90 watts. Problem is the FS wont be very low and the enclosure might need to be bigger than it is currently. I'd suggest stuffing the enclosure with poly fill.

I don't know the stock enclosure size but hell, for $25 why not? It's DVC, good XMAX, and decent efficiency with a low FS.

 

What about depth?

 

3.625" is very very shallow. I doubt the stock sub is any shallower than that. I'm not basing that off experience with the stock sub but rather knowledge of speakers in general. I'd be interested to test the stock driver and find out what it's TS parameters are.
