The vacuum has brush height adjustment for bare floor to high pile carpet. She believes having the brushes set as low as possible (ie: bare floor) on the carpet, will clean better, yet you can clearly hear the damn motor struggling, and the brush stopping on change of direction. Potentially overheating the motor and wearing out the belt. Help me win this because its obvious if the brushes aren't spinning, it's not working the carpet pile, thus rendering it fairly ineffective at picking up anything other than surface dirt. I say set it just high enough so the brushes spin at full speed, yet still make contact. Vote He or She and let's finish this. She won't listen to me. Yes this is retarded, but I Love her and need her to know she is wrong lol Not so much of an "argument" but a friendly disagreement

I voted her way. Unless you like living in the dog house for the rest of your days?

Dude I'm not even married, and I know that spending cash on a new vacuum every once in awhile is better than having this argument with your wife.

Tell her if it burns up, she gets to buy the next one. After she spends hundreds on replacing the vacuum every year, she will get the idea.

I do this. I bought one nice one and used it for years, but I walk around barefoot all the time and it started to smell like feet....really bad.

There is a price for everything on craigslist though

My gf does the same thing as your wife. I let her do it her way and I do it my way, however, my way is correct of course. :)

I think the answer is simple, with one question. Who is doing all the vacuuming? Is she is doing all the vacuuming, let her do it her way and don't complain. If you are, and she wants you to do it on the lowest setting, by God, you better put it on the lowest setting. Now if you want to get really technical, get the owners manual and find out why those settings are important. I think it could be that with a low setting on a high carpet, you will not only bog down the electric motor and burn it out faster, but at the same time, chew the carpet up as well. But if you come home to a clean house and a warm meal every day, let her burn up the motor and chew some carpet, and tell her that she's right. You'll see a week later, she made the adjustment on her own, because she knew she was wrong , but wanted to stand her ground.

um...My wife understands that i dont care how she cleans, as long as i dont have to do it. If the vacuum breaks, you have leverage. I cant imagine arguing over that with my wife

"Chew some carpet" huh? hahahahaha. Hey this is all in good fun. I know this can be interpreted to me being a control freak, but its not like that at all. It's just teasing.

Wow. The comments about having leverage over your spouse in future arguments are sure making me happy I'm single. I never knew marriage was all about power struggles until I joined TW :D

Douche bag! You fib! I do not put the brush down to the bare floor setting. Let me explain gentlemen and ladies..... We have low pile carpeting with that said I have the vacuum set at the second to lowest setting... For low pile carpet!!!! If the brush does not make contact with the dang floor all your doing is flinging nasty particles all around. I've had this vacuum for 9 yrs now!!! And it still runs just fine. Also Mr. Corrosive Tendency.... I clean your damn castle so f you!!! I'll vacuum they way I want to!! So stick it in your hole and smoke it!! Xoxoxo

Whats the point of being married if you can't argue about little, bullshit, useless things like this?

My wife and I have had this same argument about 7 years ago when we got new carpet.

So we got some carpet from a store, cut in half and added 1 cup of sand/dirt/dog fur to each carpet chunk.

Ran the vacuum her way on one side, mine on the other.

It's more of a shag carpet just so you know.

Her was was better and picked up more dirt. It picked up a noticeable amount of more dirt then setting the brushes at the correct level. I'm assuming because it was lower which could pick up the sand that fell through and had nothing to do with the brushes.

However we both agreed the strain on the vacuum from the way she does it was worse in the long run. I'd rather make 2 passes then buy a new vacuum every other year. And two passes did get most of the dirt we put in. But with them set low and our shag carpet, the strain was very noticeable on the motor.
