I'm looking into getting a new credit card with more perks. Right now I have one through Wells Farge (I never really use) and one through SouthWest Airlines. The SouthWest credit card isn't bad, but I don't find myself in too many situations were I need to fly, so the points I earn are just kind of wasting away. I use my credit card for work purchases and occasionally bigger purchases just to get the extra points.

I'm looking for a new card that will have perks that I can actually use. I know some get cash back or you can choose items to purchase with the points built up. Anyone have any ideas?

I love my Chase Freedom card...I spend quite a bit on it but it is always paid off every couple of months. They have a great point system and when I get up there I usually just have them dump funds into my bank account. I earn points on everything and they always have specials for different places, right now I get double points on Best Buy purchases through the end of Oct.

capitalone is good for people just starting off (no credit history) otherwise, amex is the way to go

Thanks! That really helps and it's nice to see which ones have a annual fee.

Hmm, I just saw a commercial for that one.

I've had a credit card for 7 years now, so I've got a good credit history and score. Might have to look into AMEX.

I keep a balance so shity card is for me. 5.9% is the tits. I have had it for 9 years though so not sure any other card would come close to those rates in this current economy. Every thing I get in the mail is 12.9% and up...I laugh and shred it.

I have the Amazon.com Visa and a Visa through our credit union at work. Have a Citi MasterCard I don't really use anymore as well. That had decent rewards but as much as I spend on Amazon that card is more beneficial for me to get points.

And obviously common sense tells you to make sure whatever cars you go with is widely used in your area Capitol one and even Amex isn't always accepted nearly as widely. I used to oversee our company issued cards at my old job and I had to switch us from Amex since our people traveling too often found themselves in areas that didn't accept it.

0% is better than 5.9%. They're out there. Promotional of course, but 0% for 2 years with a < 5% balance transfer fee is pretty awesome.

I love AMEX, but I only use it for my Costco card.

wut? 0% fixed? Never seen that in my life and my credit is top notch. I haven't checked my score in a few years, but the lack of any late payments and having paid off almost 100k in financed loans has to keep me in the top % of good credit holders.

Stupid question but how would the CCC make any money with that?

I used to play the promo 0% BS back in the day when you could without 3% transfer fees, but these days those offers are long gone.

edite: just saw you have promo... screw that. to many cards hurts your rating due to amount of available credit. you do make out in the long run though so it would be worth it.

Yeah I typed my first response to fast.

5.9% is an awesome 'unsecured debt' fixed rate.

Like you said, the 0% promo is a good in the long run if you want to consolidate your debts and have great credit.

sadly all my debt is on one card... I cut it up last month so I would stop using it.

next year this time no more truck payment and no credit card debt....WOOT!

Now I just have 21 more years of mortgage payments. Maybe a 15 year refi is due next year if rates are still low.

I learned the hard way with credit cards (bad college experience).. The only credit type things I have now though is an Amazon store card and the "bill me later" option with paypal. Both aren't small limits which I like. My savings account is my "credit card", and there's no interest to worry bout

Chase Sapphire was doing a promotion where they give you $500 if you spend $3000 in the first three months. it's got their rewards points rewards deal. there's an annual fee after the first year so i'm going to drop it pretty soon but it was pretty slick to get the $500.

if you fly a lot look at a card that earns miles on your airline of choice.

AMEX Costco earns 3% on gas, 2% restaurants, and 1% everything else. You get a check each year that you can cash at Costco. of course, you have to have a Costco membership. no annual fee.

USAA cards have good rates if you have a relationship with USAA.

x2.. I have the Gold AMEX and get 3 points on groceries and gas, 2 points on dinning and 1 for everything else, and that shit adds up quick! The nice thing is that you can transfer your points to hotels, airlines, Amazon for free or use it on AMEX through their rewards.

My advice: DON'T GET A CREDIT CARD.

There are other ways to beef up your credit history, and in the long run the perks will cost you more than they are worth (because the credit card company has this crazy scheme in action to actually make money, no matter how much they're giving back).
