AR15's are like getting hooked on modding a Tacoma. First you just want one fairly simple one that "will suit my needs and I will be happy forever".

Then you realize if you have a 20" barrel one you can shoot Service Rifle competitions, and then you realize how much fun they are in 9mm, then you need one or two with supressors. And a real lightweight woulf be nice too! It never ends....

Does any one have an AR chambered in 6.8SPC? Any real benefits over an AR-10

I thought about doing a build, but mags are $40 each and its about $1 per round meaning I'm going to have to save my brass and reload so that's an extra $300 on equipment + misc.

Yes I run the 68 for hunting. It's. phenomenal hunting cartridge and a hell of a lot lighter to lug around than an AR10 when hiking and stalking.
Mags are no more than an 5.56 with c-prods out there now. Ammo will be comin down. Federal is getting into the game as well as their American eagle line and Tula. Of course the hunting rounds are a little more pricy but aren't hunting rounds always. I use the Barnes 95TTSX with great success many like the Hornady 120SST ammo which is cheaper and is working great as well.

Will a 6.8 take down an elk or deer around the 300-500 yard range or am I asking too much?

I want a more powerful round in the ar platform and it will keep costs down because I can share a lower with my ar15

My issued patrol rifle is an RRA tactical with Surefire rails and light w/standard stock and Aimpoint ML2 on top.

I own a Colt 6920LE with complete Magpul MOE furniture, ASAP2 sling, and Eotech xps2 on top.

I want an LWRC Piston IC.

I think you're asking a lot of any caliber to take an elk at 500 yds. The 6.8 would not be considered an elk cartridge, but I'm sure it's been done. Probably not at 500 yds though.

OK, looked into it - think of a 6.8 as a slightly slower 243 Win. Same weight bullets, a couple hundred fps slower. I wouldn't shoot a deer at 500 yds with a 243, and I wouldn't think of it for elk at all. Plus the 6.8 is a fatter bullet so it won't work as well at longer ranges. I don't know what the 6.8 guys are seeing in the field on deer but I think it's a solid 250 yd deer cartridge. Would be great for pigs and coyotes too of course.

There is a lot of debate on this one. Harrison of AR15Performance took an elk at 372 yards with one of his in Colorado. Bullet construction means a lot. For instance the new Berger 140gr VLD is still supersonic at 1000yards out of the 6.8 which is a total game changer but no one has done any live animal testing on it. I'd say the SST and TTSX are easily good for white tail to 300-350 depending on the shooter of course. Chris Lucci of wild river ranch Texas has killed 100s of pigs testing the TTSX and now he's testing a new 80gr raptor bullet that is designed to shed its petals so they cut. He started on coyotes and had good success so now he's using them on deer. His first deer was intentionally over 200 yards with a heart lung shot to see how far the animal might run (he's a big advocate of the neck shot due to breaking the neck severing the carotid and the animal doesn't run as am I). This deer didn't take a step, it dropped in place and didn't flop or anything just went stiff and dead.

ja7a5ete_2a1c9e5cc58d2aec228d5dfe92ae9dbcfb02179b.jpgdeer after the raptor hit it. So far everything he's shot has had those knife type stab looking wounds. Those are from the petals.

eze7ujes_9fecb325b13defcb153dd2a5f11f0fa7ab808bbe.jpghole through neck 95gr TTSX left at 100yards

    munagymu_4040881fda9e00e93c579a4eb6fc29b4ae67974e.jpgentrance wound from 120sst inside 100yards u6y3ataq_c66bcf4bc2a4d8f455916c7cab08043dbb6e72a1.jpgexit wound.
The 6.8 is sort of known for penetration. I believe it was Chris also who took 3 hogs with one shot. Pure luck of course but it did lodge in the third pig. If you guys are ever looking for a great pig hunt look up his place in Texas. He works with tnvc and offers a night hunt using NV and Supressed weapons. I go every year for white tail and we usually pull out the toys and go play at night trying to rid the property of pigs.

The other option for a hunting rifle is a maten receiver system and a lightweight pencil barrel 308 with a light weight carrier. If careful you can keep it in the 7-8 lb range.

Quick vid of me popping a 12" gong at the far berm, around 240 yds out. Just playing around with my iPhone. Gun is an 11.5" SBR with an AAC can on it. If you crank it up you can hear the gong, though you can't see it very well. The white target you can see is an IPSC headless target at 100 yds, for reference. Sight is a 1x EOtech XPS.

You are not kidding one bit... I don't even calculate how much I spend on Tacomas or Firearms, because I would probably be depressed, but f%&k it, do what makes you happy, and I am one happy bastard :)
