painting rims

I saw a couple of threads where you guys posted pics of your trucks with painted rims. I have to say, they look pretty good. I've been wanting to get some black rims. But now I'm thinking about painting my stock rims. How do you think my truck would look if I painted these rims?

 

i think they would look good just use good spray paint

Sorry to dig up a "dead" thread, but how long did you wait for them to dry before reinstallin the wheels? I have read a couple how-to's on painting rims, and they go into some in depth stuff that i dont think i have the patience/time for. My truck is my DD and i need it for work, so i cant have my truck on jack stands for multiple days.

I have been wanting black wheels for a long time, i just dont have the $$ lying around being a college student.

 

i sprayed a coat on mine once every 10 minutes (several light coats), and i waited about 45 minutes to put them back on, then let the truck sit overnight to finish curing the paint. i half-assed mine about every way possible and they came out great...i was the first one to do this on here so let me know if you need any help

 

be sure to use wheel paint if your going to spray paint them. its a cheap and good alternative to powder coating. especially if u'll be doing a lot of offroading. u can touch it up whenever u like. another suggestion would be to prime it with black primer like said above, hit it with a good coat of the black paint ur using, wet sand that coat, apply another coat, wet sand that and put a good coat of clear coat on top. u can even apply 2 coats of clear. just be sure to wet sand inbetween. don't sand too rough. i would suggest something greater than 400 very wet. u just want to make a good smooth surface without the gloss for the next layer of paint.

 

Yeah i figured i would let it sit overnight, but some of the walk throughs i was reading was recommending they sit for almost up to a week and i dont have the time for my truck to be out of commision that long. Just wanted to make sure it would be okay to dry on after just a night of drying. I would def avoind the dirt roads for a while.

Yeah i was not going to spare expense on the paint seeing as i would rather this work and pay $40 than shell out $600 for some new wheels. And if it doesnt work, well then im getting new wheels anyways lol. But yeah i do off-road a lot and i thin it was TuRD that said no clear coat so i could shake and spray touch up.

Again i was doing some more reading and some of the reviews are saying to use a spray adhesive prior to priming/painting. Did any of you guys do this? Also, Some people i am reading about are using a can or paint PER wheel. DOes this sound like way over kill or am i just reading your guys' posts wrong?

 

they're definitely more fragile after spray paint vs powder coating them, but shouldn't be too bad.

a can/wheel doesn't sound crazy, but maybe a little heavy.
spray some adhesive promoter and do a lot of light coats of paint allowing them to dry fully after each coat. this will ensure a multiple layer paint job and will help with chipping esp. when offroading

 

Have the rims powder coated

 

I thought about powder coating, but i figured if im going to spend $200 on powdercoating, i could just save up and buy a set of wheels i like. I figured $30-$40 on some paint would hold me over till i could find a decent priced set of wheels. Ive been looking at the Raceline Renegade 6's or the Helo HE835. I know both will fit and are both around $130 a wheel.

 

Why dont they make more aftermarket rims with crimpable rim edge for weights. There's a reason all factory rims are this way.

 

Umm... i dont know? Never really came to mind.
