future tire choice

Well as time goes on im probably gonna be getting new tires some time near the beginning of 2013

ill be running 285/75/16" when i do get tires probably on the scs stealth f-5 rims

ive ran bfg AT on my suburban so i know thats a good tire to run
ive also ran the procomp AT and loved those worked well for me on snowy roads in the winter going to work.(i see very little snow as it melts fast)

this truck is my daily driver and i commute on the highway about 30 miles one way up into the mountains of san diego.

but id like to still have a relatively aggressive tire(compared to my stock sport street tires on the truck still

i was thinking about these but i do a lot of highway.

i pick up a lot of tire treads and carasses so im not gonna go with retreads

 

yea i like the look of the big beefy lugs and they seem like they wouldnt be overly obnoxious on the highway

I have Procomp xtreme AT 285/75/17. The reason I went with these is they say you get 40k out of them, I have 30k on them right now and still have plenty of tread left. Plus they still have that mildly aggressive look to them, and they aren't very loud on the highway. There's still a hum but not crazy

Leo, I just bought a set of Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ's they had great reviews, good price great on road manners and good offroad reviews. I had them on the last run and they worked very well in the sand.

When I was searching for A/Ts after I destroyed my BFG KM2s, I wanted a tire that was still aggressive but had the qualities of an A/T. I ended up choosing the Wrangler Duratracs. The race was between them and the General A/T2s. I've read great things about both tires. I absolutely love my Duratracs. So quiet, smooth on the road, awesome in the sand, and from what I've read "the best tire for snow and rain" plus lets face it; they look awesome. Good luck on your decision Leo.

Those of you who get 60,000 out of the BFG must never leave the pavement. Granted, at work I'm hard on my tires, but this is after only 15,000 miles. The traction was average when new and quickly wore down to treacherous.

even when i had these on my heavy ass suburban they didnt wear down that fast.

what do you do to your tires? hahaha drive on a cheese grader? lol

 

You could call a lot of the terrain out here that. These are on a code 3 LE vehicle that gets driven very quickly to crimes or medical emergencies, mostly in 4HI.

 

ahhh durr i just saw your location. yea if your running out there at speed especially its for sure gonna tear up tires.

i can imagine wear and tear you must put on vehicles too.



i work for caltrans and pretty much all of our light trucks get the goodyear silent armor tires and ill tell you what those tires dont last very long.

 

In this picture my truck is running the Firestone Destination M/T, by far the longest lasting off-road tire I've used to date. We'll see how the current Hercules Trail Digger M/T's hold up.

 

duratracs. had em on my 07 before i got rid of it and gonna put em back on my current truck as soon as i finish shredding the rugged fails that came on it

 

I've had various 4x4's for over 35 years, several different makes. For the first 15 years I had a few different brands of tires. I kept going back to the BFG AT's with a few MT's mixed in through the years. I can't see any reasons to use anything else. Their treads last longer than some brands. I cut fewer of them on rocks and other off road hazards than any other tire I've used. They grip rock very well. If I need a replacement they are easy enough to get. (I buy from Discount Tire and pay for their warranty. It doesn't matter what you do to a tire; their warranty gets you a new one). YMMV

id be interested to see how those pro comp xtremes hold up though

 

DuraTrac. Drove across country and no issues. Quieter than I would've thought with the aggressive look. No worse than the BFG AT I drove for years. They look better in person than in a pic. If you are looking for something cheaper, the guys at Discount Tire highly recommended Hankook Dynapro ATM over all their other AT.
