Anyone have any thoughts on the Gatekeeper by jimmiejammer ? A little pricey at $25 plus $6 for s&h but am curious if this would be a bigger deterrent than other locks or the hose clamp mod.

I have one and it is a nice piece of hardware. Should be a pretty good deterrent for most thieves. It would take some decent effort to get past it.

This is the same one TUFFY sells. This would prolly deter your average kid but anyone who works on cars much would have a set of Alan wrenches that would make short work of it.

Not sure about earlier models but on the 2013 you have to break the tack welds on the hinge bolt to be able to use this type of protector.

Thanks for replies- I checked out the product pictures and was hoping the "special tool" was not a standard/metric allen wrench. I have a 2012 and had a hard time getting the hinge bolt out also, had read earlier this was hard to remove. I was at dealer and had a body shop employee loosen it for me because I was worried about breaking it. He told me they weren't welded but had a loctite like product. Don't if this is true or not but he was able to loosen it fairly easily with his tool. I'll probably go ahead and buy one then put my non-working Masterlock over it. Maybe thief will feel sorry for me when he sees all the money I wasted and hopefully move on.

When I first tried to back the bolt out using a Torx bit I striped the head out without loosening it. The next day I took the truck to the dealership for some other work and the service guy told me the hinge bolts were welded. I DID notice what looked like the points of an external tooth star washer between the hinge and the bolt heads. When I finally drilled the head off the bolt it still looked like some sort of metal star washer still stuck to the head of the bolt, the parts that contacted the hinge was rough like it had been sheared off.

People will steal anything if they get the chance. Around here, you gotta watch your shit, cos someone will walk off with it. I haven't had anything stolen off of this truck yet, but I haven't even had it for two months yet. And I guess it helps that it looks like shit, so nobody would want to steal anything off it.
I've had stuff like that happen before. When I was a kid, someone stole all the wheels off my Dad's Pinto during a hurricane and left the car on blocks. IN A HURRICANE. HOW.

weird. if you add up the ppl that say theirs was stolen + the ppl that say their friends where stolen + the ppl that say theirs AND their friend. it = the same amount that people claim they stole somebodys. hehe coincidence?

At any given time there are four or five tailgates for sale on the Craigslist of Southern Ca. I think they are stealing them in one county and selling them in another county.

Anyone who doesnt install some sort of security is just asking for it to disappear. That thing comes off way too easy.

Luckily, the market for stolen tacoma tailgates seems pretty low here :D

Let's hope it stays that way....
