Me and my wife did a zombie/mud run 5k today an had a blast. Lesson learned, 90% of people are way out of shape. Half a mile in and lots of people were already walking.

If shit hits the fan we will bug in for as long as possible and let everyone kill themselves off.

I've done a few things like that and am very fortunate to be in moderate shape due to being in the military. I feel somewhat bad when I walk around the mall and see obese people and think....yes fatass, eat another cheeseburger.
On a side note, my house only has 4 windows and all have a solid oak frame....I love this because I can easily fortify it. My wife thinks I'm kookoo for not wanting more windows.

I like recurves best. they are lighter weight and more simple, plus shooting instinctively is faster than using sights. That said, there just isn't much energy in an arrow and sometimes it takes a while for stuff you shoot to die. I would not use it as a defense weapon unless that was the last thing I had, and even then I would prefer a sword over the bow for wet work up close.

I shot a 400 lb bear with it about a month ago. Took all of the arrows in the quiver to get it done and all shots were in the vitals.

Funny, I always heard bear was some of the better wild game. I've eaten most wild game available in the US but never bear - we don't get a lot of bear meat brought back to MO.

I eat it. You can substitute bear for pork in almost any recipe. I grind it up and make sausage and use the hams to make roast out of. Ain't nothing better than smoked bear roast. It's kind of like pulled pork. You can also render the fat and make bear grease or use it to make soap, pie crusts, bathtub C-4...err stump removal devices. I'm also getting a half mount done and getting the skull bugged and bleached. Here's the last one I got a few years back-

As far as recovering arrows, I got one back out of him that wasn't broken, and the fletches were messed up on it but he kept biting at the arrows. The broadheads were all recovered but all needed sharpening.

The fur is better in the fall around here, it gets thin and rubbed off when they hibernate. The trick about the meat is to keep it very clean and cool it out quickly. Also remove ALL the fat that you can, and you will have some good meat.

If the shtf it will be pretty dang hard to get here. It would be wiser to buy some property and be set up in advance. Here is a great article on BOL, and states rank for retreats-http://www.survivalblog.com/retreatareas.html

I think I'd shoot for Oreg, Colo, WY or Mont. Just for the diverse land, semi abundance of wildlife and low population densities per sq mile.
Granted that with all the survivalists around the country now, once you get there, you might not be as alone as you'd think.

I lived in idaho for a year and a half and I loved it! Id love to move back there within the next 7-10 years.

Everyone is more spread out. not really any BIG cities. I Think the pop. of Boise is only around 170k people.

Think it would be better to have a few people ( possible 2 families ) to hole up with you? I know it would be more of a burden on food and such, but building shelters and gathering foods / working would be made easier? Opinions?

Most definately, many hands make light work BUT in a real survivial situation, say food is running low you had better know who your roomates are ???

A 500 grain arrow hits with about 20% of the energy (~155j vs ~945j) of a 55 grain 5.56x45mm round (Arrow moving at 320 feet per second, bullet moving at 3100 feet per second at the muzzle). However, they are designed differently and do different things. A modern carbon arrow with a good head will penetrate right through most game you would hunt in a survival situation, I've seen them penetrate through an elk if the shot is right in the vitals. If the arrow penetrates all the way through, it will likely be recoverable and reusable, most arrows break when they are stuck in an animal and the animal takes off through trees and brush, snapping the arrow in the process.

I've been on at least three hunts every year for the past 8 years, and I can say with certainty that a bow is as effective at killing as any reasonable gun is, granted I've never seen a black bear taken with a bow, so I can't speak to that. However, when it comes to personal defense, or even if I had to go on the offense, I wouldn't even bother carrying the bow. It's a hunting tool, and nothing else.

Yup. Bears are god damn tough and generally don't stand broadside looking at you like a deer does. I've killed lots of game in one shot too, but I can't do it consistent enough to consider it in a defense situation. Give me a good blade any day. My 18x optics mounted on my favorite 28" bbl magnum is best of course.
