I've actually been accelerating fast and staying around 3000 rpms and I drive an hour and 15 mins to work each way. I find that if I stay between 2500 and 3000 rpms in 5th gear, I get the best fuel economy. I've heard that engines are like vacuums so getting them up to speed the fastest and keeping the throttle somewhat open but rpms around 2700 that the fuel economy is better. Stop and go traffic will be a killer regardless I'm afraid.

Can't add to anything that hasn't already been said...I bought an old Camry for 5 grand and use it for a DD, but it is still way more fun driving the truck. Lately, I've switch to "no ethanol" gas and notice a slight improvement. Not enough to justify the additional fuel cost, but I am planning on getting a TRD supercharger which is why I've switched to 91 octane no ethanol. If you have access to cheap no ethanol gas, then this would yield about 2-3 mpg. But it is only available in limited gas stations, in certain states.

What kinda mpg are you seeing? If I get above 2000rpm I see a drastic drop in mpg. I drive 180 miles round trip twice a week. If I stay 55-65mph I can do 21mpg, if I am 65-75mph I get 16-18mpg. *with 33's

I kinda replicate that in the winter. When it's below freezing out the engine warms up noticeably faster pulling under-hood air so I just unbolt the tube from the filter assembly to the fender and throw it into the closet until spring.

That way all winter my IATs stay in the 50-70F range and my mileage (at least last year) keeps between 20 and 21 mpg.

Once it's warm out you start to lose mileage without that tube though. Hot air with this engine's compression and its love of pinging means ignition advance drops like a rock. I've seen it drop and stay in the 23-24° range at 55 mph (it should be 28-31) with IATs over 120F after a single full throttle push, and it won't give that advance back for some time.

If you reduce drag, your mileage will increase. I'd estimate 36mpg with this setup.

...And risk smashing into the back of said truck. If you can't see the trucker's mirror, then they can't see you.

You don't need to be that close. They have so much 'dirty air' following them that you can be 10-12 car lengths back and still see your instantaneous mileage rise something like 5%, provided there's not much crosswind. Happens to me all the time. My Fit was so sensitive to it that I could start to see the presence of an 18-wheeler on the freeway on the gauge over 1/8 a mile away.

Shoot just having another car at a safe distance in front of you is worth a bit.

Cheapest mods, besides learning how to drive all over again... lets see; more pressure in the tires (almost free), grill block sized for load and temp (but not everyone has the tech to watch coolant/tranny temps), synthetic lubes in the lightest weight that applies (i.e. 75w85 in the diffs, maybe 0w30 in the v6, depending on climate and usage), don't buy a lift, don't run the AC/defrost unless you need it, keep unneeded junk out of the truck, drive the speed limit (or *gasp* under it), spend more time reading cleanmpg/ecomodder than TW, carpooling, restore a bicycle, jogging... what did I miss?
