The Ruger Mini 14 might be a great alternative.

Can't claim anything, bought from Fish08 and leaving it like it sits. Perfect!
I just bought a SigSauer M400 Enhanced new off of GunBroker for 919 to my FFL with a Sig carry bag and hard case. I've already ordered the Magpul AFG, 2 pmags, and the BCM large gunfighter. Should make a great gun at a nice price point.

Well one has a front sight post and the other has a gas block without a sight. So the one without also has the vtac rail but you'd need to add sights. I think that's the only difference with a quick scan.

Unless I am missing something too, they answered your question. One has a front sight base, the other has a low profile gas block (instead of the standard one that is incorporated in the front sight base).

    Front sight base [IMG]

    low profile gas block [IMG]

The later eliminates the front sight, making it easier to have optics mounted without the front sight being an obstruction in the field of view. But, you would need to add a pop up front sight, if you still want back up sights (in case your optics don't work when you need them).

Because I like hitting my targets :p Honestly I have a diamond in the rough AK A DCI built Century Yugo M70AB2 underfolder. It is built with the RPK 1.6mm receiver and has the grenade gas shutoff and sight. It hits what I point it at, its build quality is pretty darn good, and I am very happy with it being my one and only AK.

Here is one of his quotes, I am looking for the one that specifically addresses the need for the mags.

Here is what one of the new 6.8 loadings does to half inch AR500 steel at 100 yards through an 8.5 inch barrel.

    uciwbrinell_8318f1c39751728bcb7645c589debe6033e37228.jpg

If I pick up another caliber it will be 6.8.

what type of ammo are you using? I've hit AR500 plate with a .300 win mag at 25 yards and it didn't even dimple.

I'm betting the SSA AP rounds LWRC was originally testing.

Thank you guys for the replies. I am new to this. I saw the front sight and the gas block as both of you have stated so their doesnt appear to be any diierance in the barrel. I only ask because of the price difference, is the forearm that expensive?

the cheaper one you're going to put another $30 in for handguards. The other you're going to need a front sight.

The Troy handguard retails for $175. It's a nice upgrade. I run Troy handguards on all my new builds.

yes, the handguards are that expensive and usually require tools to change stuff around like that. Some people would rather buy an upper built how they want it rather than piece it together themselves.

also for the 14.5" you have to have the flash hider pinned and welded otherwise it falls under the NFA rules. you will have to cut the flash hider off if you want to change out the gas block/front sight later on.

you can also go with the non CHF barrel and save some money
    http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-14-5-Mid-Length-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-mid-14.htm

not being an ass but if you didnt know the difference in the two upper you posted above then I highly doubt you would benefit from the CFH barrel.

ok i like the midwest handguards. is a floating handguard necessary? flashhider is pinned but the sight comes off no problem, can i get the floating HG on without cutting off the FH.

    nothing is necessary ;).

the front sight post will not come off with out either cutting it off or cutting off the welded FH. The FH is thicker than the gas block and a sight post.

I do believe that some companies make a 2 piece free float handguard though that you could use.

or you can get drop in rails and not have to mess with any of that cutting stuff

here is a two piece FF rail that allows you to keep your front sight

sorry i should have mentioned its a YHM flip up, two peice, comes right off. ok cool, so there are two peice free floating ones. two piece is good so I can take it off easily to clean and dress the barrel right? what is the advantage of a free float though?

better accuracy some say. most get the FF rails just so they can have more rails space and get the support hand out further. Then there are the guys who get them because they look cool.

It's their cost of the handguard plus the extra cost of a low profile gas block vs. the A2 sight (which isn't much) plus their time to put it on plus a little markup. This particular handguard doesn't require special tools so you could always buy it later and install yourself with minimal difficulty.

No harm no foul. I am new to the process of why things have to be used. I am one of the people that would rather have my upper complete. I will prob order the one that comes complete the original reason for my question was because when I order the upper I can have a differant comp installed (the PWI FSC 556) for an extra 109.00 which puts it at 868.00 for the set up not including the BCG and Charging handle. Holy Crap AR's are expensive
