Hey guys I am going to look at 99 Tacoma that is supercharged for my stepdad. The guy said the supercharger belt a couple days ago and hasn't replaced so I was wondering will the truck still run without the belt?

It shouldn't, since normally an engine sucks air in by creating vacuums in each cylinder after firing, now the supercharger pushes it in and that occurs by the belt from the crank spinning the supercharger pulley to push air in. So unless there is some kind of bypass that I've never heard of, the supercharger is essentially acting like a block from allowing air in.

Sorry man, but another belt shouldn't terribly expensive and shouldn't be hard to put on.

He said he got a quote from the dealer to replace all the belts for $500 and he doesn't want to spend that. He discount the price of the truck 500 for the belt

I would suggest you tell him to fix it and pay asking price assuming it does run. Would hate to buy a truck being told that the belt is only issue and find out it has more than just belt issues.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
The SC belt is about 30 bucks 500 must be for the labor to replace all belts. if you really want to look at the truck go buy a 30 belt slap it on and test drive it. the owner doesn't sound like he know much about the truck if he thinks it takes 500 to fix the belt issue and have it running.

I would be willing to do that buy putting on the belts looks not that easy. I'm used to the single bet type system that has a tensioner built into the best system lol

What SC is it My black SC has a belt tensioner on it the crappy thing is you need to remove the other belts to get the new one on :( It's not that bad about 20 to 30 min tops. And hell it could save you 500 bucks on the truck :D

Don't buy a vehicle with a supercharger on it unless you can test drive it with the blower spinning. Period.

Here's the thing. If it's just a belt, you win.

If the supercharger is seized, you lose.

I wouldn't buy not knowing which it was.

If I was mechanically apt and the owner was willing, I'd agree on a price, show up on a Saturday morning and we'd change the belt together. Then if everything worked great after the belt was on, I'd pay the agreed upon price and drive the truck away.

Or if I wasn't good mechanically, or the owner didn't want me wrenching on the truck, I'd agree on a lower price - have the owner take the truck to whatever shop he wanted and have them fix the belt, and then pay the agreed upon price, again if everything was working once the belt was in place.

    Two cents, adjusted for inflation.

I think Jerry's saying the same thing I am - change the belt first, THEN buy the truck.

Yep but with the 1st Gens if the SC belt snaps your dead in the water :( that belt runs everything but the AC and ALT. and that's why i have 2 belts in my truck ready for just that.

The truck is located in sw Houston. It is a 2nd gen supercharger. I defiantly wouldn't buy a vehicle without driving it

I carry spares too, would hate to see what happens when one snaps.

Depending on what kind of tensioner the SC on this truck has, it could be just a few minutes to install a new belt. Thats if it has the dynamic tensioner.
