I'm an animal person and am thrilled to see the advice being given in this thread. I grew up with wonderful shelter mutts, and my cat came to me out of the woods when he fit in the palm of my hand. Pay attention to what's being said here -- there's some great information!

Animals are just like people and they feed off of your energy and emotions. Especially early on, be patient and understanding.

If you're going for a certain breed, know it well. An Australian Sheep Dog is highly intelligent and needs to work, both physically and mentally. Without a flock to herd, don't be surprised if you come home to a pile of canned food in the middle of your kitchen floor. (seriously!!) Other breeds have similar characteristics.

The "trouble" most dogs cause is simply out of boredom. Find a dog that matches your lifestyle and living conditions and you'll both be happier for it.

    Good luck in your search!!

My dog likes to heard my kids, ages 2 and 4. As long as he has a rawhide, that is all he'll chew. He really is a good dog. He even likes it when I tinker with my truck. He'll sit right there next to me, patiently waiting for me to finish. It's like he understands the awsomeness of the Tacoma and my need to pay a little attention to the truck! I agree with the aforementioned advice. Even as an experienced lifelong dog owner, a new dog/puppy is a daunting experience. Not a decision to take lightly.

    Toy4Life,
Tell your vet about your dog getting car sick. I have HEARD that you can give your dog a benadryl ( I guess that's how you spell it). But certainly ask your vet BEFORE you do that.

    mvega,
How should you approach the shelter? See if the shelter has a website first. That'll give you an idea about what they expect. Some shelters can be really inquisitive. Don't let that discourage you. They just want to make sure that the dog is getting a good home. Since you are looking for a weimaraner that should narrow your choices a bit! See which one's time is up and rescue that one!!!! Wouldn't that make you feel good? But, I'm not trying to tell you what to do. I'm just glad that you are considering a shelter.....so many good dogs get "put down" for no reason at all.
You say you are 450 miles from Dallas. Where exactly are you? If you give me your ZIP, I would be glad to help you find a shelter or rescue organization.

I am too "special" to figure out how to put pictures of my rescued babies up! The sad thing is, there was a doggie thread once before, and I was able to post a few pics! Can't remember how I done it!!!!

Mr. Phantom you sound like well trained man ;>, but certainly I read your lines and inspired me a lot of love for your dogs and for all dogs. I respect that, I know is not easy to get used to something new but you just mentioned it, knowledge and patience are the keys for all new things in life. I'm taking note as my main lines of action before adopting or getting a new dog.

I forgot to say this before. Take the dog to the vet immediately to get a heartworm test (some shelters will do that for you) and get vaccines for rabies, parvo, etc. That only costed me around $50. Get some kind of identification for your new friend. Something for his collar. I have found that for outside dogs it is best to have the tag attached to the collar itself. I tried those ID tags that you can buy at PetsMart, Petco, etc. I would have to replace them often because they kept falling off. You can also have a microchip implanted. I don't think they are too expensive.

Be patient with your new buddy. He/she will need time to adapt. The poor baby will have gone from the streets or a home where it was once loved to a shelter......and now to another home. I'm sure that HAS to be stressful for them. Some of the animals in shelters have been abused or neglected, and it may take time to for them to regain trust.

Again, mvega, glad you are considering a shelter.

If you hear of anyone talking about purchasing an animal, ask them to consider a shelter!!!!:D

Walk in with a large butchers knife and ask to see their fattest dogs....

I agree that alot of "bad" dogs are bad because their owners are incompetant. it is definately the owners job to train and discipline the dog appropriately. Having said that, some breeds are more prone to certain behaviors than others. some breeds are smarter, some are dumber. some are more docile and some are more aggressive. That is genetic and no amount of training can change that.

I love your dog Toy! I forgot to mention the Australian breeds. Some friends of mine had one and it was a natural frisbee catcher, no matter how fast or far you threw it he could catch it 9 times out of 10. plus it had the cool one brown eye one blue eye thing, which i think looks cool. and from what i hear they are amont the smartest breeds. Looks like you have a cool little buddy.

He is cool, a bit of a wild child, but cool. It's funny you mentioned frisbee, he refuses to play with those anymore. We were playing catch one day and when he caught the frisbee, it cracked and his tongue got pinched and stuck in the crack. I had to pull it off his tongue, he freaked!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the Aussie Blue Heeler and Cattle Dogs were different names for the same breed? I grew up always hearing them called blue heelers, but they were red varieties too, so I thought the name was changed to Aussie Cattle Dog. Now, there's also the Aussie Shepherds. I had one of those growing up -- bigger dog, longer haired, closer to a collie without the freakish long nose. Is that the second part of the cross?

We always had herding breeds growing up. One was a border collie/lab cross. Great dog! There was the Australian Shepherd, plus a Sheltie (Shetland Sheep Dog). The herding breeds are smart in general. I'm trying to talk the wife into getting a Welsh Corgie once my daughter is over her allergy shots since we don't have the acreage I had growing up and want a smaller dog, but I still want a herding dog.

You may be right, I just know he's blue heeler and something else Australian. He's an Aussie. We (my wife and I) inhereited Carter after his original owner, a cousin of my wife, moved and couldn't keep him. He's almost a year and a half old. I've had him for about 6 months.

Not my kind of hound unless you lost your crotch and want your best friend to find it for you. I'd rather Eat Steak :hungry:.

I hear ya Jedi. We're both teary eyed here right now. My wife saw me looking at this thread and mentioned that it was a year ago tomorrow that our greyhound Reba went to the great couch in the sky.
