Well mine was the same surface rust wise. The issue is not the surface rust its the rusting from the inside out so ... I have some pix of the holes/surface rust before the replacement if ur interested in seeing them

    ABS sucks.
Mine has had the frame sprayed, but they didn't appear to spray forward of the door jamb. The front UCA mounts, front shock mounts and the frame area there look awful. Are they supposed to spray everything or just the problem areas?

To both of the above: IMHO I really would care less if they did a good job spraying the frame, as long as it was done and put in the system in order to upkeep the warranty. If it was done shitty, just means that much sooner to a new frame for which you should still be eligible due to the spray (regardless of spray quality)

    :notsure:

Backinblack03, if/once you get a new frame you will get new UCA mounts, shock mounts, LCAs, etc so if they rust in the process they will still be replaced when the previously mentioned happens.

Alittle more info on the spraying: as long as it gets sprayed, documented, and subsequently inspected i believe yearly, the frame coverage is extended for 15 years from the spray date. so no worries about it being sprayed and out-living the replacement time-frame. At least this is how I have had it explained to me by 2 different dealerships (Toyota of Grand Rapids, and Dunning Toyota)

The thing is they can spay all the fancy undercoatings on our frames but its meaningless. They are coating over rust and scale, think about it if they don't perfectly clean all the surface of all the rust its like putting a band aid on a hatchet wound. If you had rust on your door bottom would you hastily sand off the big chunks and just spray it with undercoating no, you haven't killed the active rust and its too little to late!

i agree completely, thats why you just go through the motions in order to please them, and when it doesn't work and your frame has holes... :D:cool:

I was told by a service tech. at the dealship the old frame treatment dried up and flaked off. Just what happened to mine in 2 years. It looked like it was never treated. He said the new frame spray stays sticky or tacky to allow flexing and will not crack and flake.

My frame failed the inspection last spring ( rusted through in one place). Frame was replaced by Toyota. I had a rental car for 2-3 weeks. Never had any issues with my truck afterwards. They did a great job.

I also ended up with all new brake lines...updated rear springs..all oils changed...parking brake assembly replaced..some front end parts..free of charge.
Like someone said...your frame HAD to have been treated by Toyota to receive the frame replacement.

The bill for mine was $13k paid for by Toyota.

I bought a new front bumper and had my timeing belt changed on my coin.

Check out my pictures of the process....pretty scary going in to see your truck spread out all over the service bays!!!

Well, I started down this road today. Had my truck inspected each of the past 3 years at toyota dealerships - none offered rust treatment and said they didn't find any holes. Today (about 9 months since my last frame inspection) I get a call from my mechanic saying I have a hole that he can stick 3 of his fingers through.

Cross your fingers for me - hoping Toyota will replace the frame since I had it inspected. If anyone has links to the extension for 01-04 from toyota that would be useful since I can't find it online.

Bought the truck in Buffalo, NY but I now live in Utah - this is the other potential hangup with frame replacement, since the dealership here is clueless.

Can you post a picture of the rust hole?

Also, like i mentioned in the PM, make sure its a dealership that has done it before otherwise even if they did decide to do it, they'd probably jack something up

anyone have experience with doing this in Canada?

apparently my truck was inspected and had the spray protection done....my frame is still visibly rusty with very little as far as the spray coating goes....i've been told by two different dealerships that the inspection and spray was done

i also had a tech at the second dealership i went to look at it and he said it was done VERY poorly

should i take some pictures and write a letter to Tacoma? maybe have a lawyer do it? i have multiple lawyers in the family that could do this for me

or maybe try calling head office first?

I guess i'm missing it, what exactly is your issue?

If it was sprayed (regardless of how well it was done) then the warranty on the frame is in tact. So are you saying there are holes and toyota isn't replacing the frame even though it was sprayed?

Toyota replaces the frame due to rust perforations, not surface rust.

I'll get a picture of the hole up tonight sometime. Talked to a case manager and the frame will either get replaced or they'll buy back the truck, so all good news thus far.

However, the next issue is that I have no idea where to get this work done. This recall is only for the "salt states" according to the Toyota case manager that talked to me, so it's unlikely that any of the dealerships in the SLC, UT area have ever dealt with this particular job. If anyone has any recommendations that would be fantastic, but for now I'm scheduled to go in for my inspection on Monday, and we'll take it from there.

The next question: what additional work should I get done to the truck while it's taken apart?? I'm definitely planning on doing the timing belt/water pump, but is there anything else I should have them do?

Will they replace all of the fluids as well??

i brought my 2003 in for a frame inspection two weeks ago once i noticed small rust holes in the frame. The truck went through the frame under coating process less then two years ago. While looking at the frame my mechanic stuck his finger through a section of the frame. I contacted toyota corpperate and explained the situation. I was asigned a case number. I heard back from the case manager last week and I am waiting for a new frame to be shipped and installed.

My father's 98 got bought back after they were able to punch a hole about the size of a dime in the frame. The rest was rock solid. He bought an 03 from the dealer that did the inspection. It was the 4th time he had brought it in and I suspect they may have tried a bit harder than usual to make that hole. But it ended up being great for him. I think he paid a difference of like $500 to get a truck 5 years newer with 60k less miles and brand new tires. My 96 probably would have been bought back had the original owner brought it in for a second inspection after the first one in 08. I was able to punch a few holes in it and with it being older than 15 years I went crazy with a pick hammer and then cut out the affected areas and welded plates over them. And then coated it liberally inside and out with eastwood rust encapsulator, then sprayed the inside of the frame with oil. It should be good now. My local dealer told me that not every truck was affected. Some would be properly coated inside one framerail and not the other, some would be fine on both sides. Some would rot out completely. They had seen completely abused trucks that were never so much as hosed off that passed the inspection with flying colors. Some religiously maintained garage queens failed. My driver's framerail on my 96 was perfect. The two places I had to repair were on the passenger side. And honestly not bad at all. I recall fixing much worse on much newer Toyota trucks back 15-20 years ago. I had an 84 that almost broke in half in 1993 the frame was so rotted.
