    it does matter
there can be fitment issues with brake calipers and backspacing will allow you to fit wider tires.

most wheel sites have you select your vehicle make/model/year to narrow it down to what will fit your truck.

Gas tank skid. There's two bolts on the back and 2 bolts up front (actually 3 up front, but only 2 of them hold the skid on).

The rear two bolt into the strap that wrap the tank and which seem to be missing.

    Looks like it^

Also, question. Will this wheel size fit my 97 tacoma? Ive been reading around and it looks like it will. On 285/75/16s
    16x8
    6-5.5 3-5/8 -22

It'll fit, but the backspacing is pretty aggressive. With a 3-5/8" backspacing you'll be rubbing the pinchweld hard with 285's. Nothing grinder and hammer won't fix, but you'll rub.

I forgot to add that Im putting in a 2.5 lift too. That change anything as far as rubbing?

I only noticed it cuz I was checking my brake line to c how it was doin. Can I remove it. I can weld a strap on but I'm kinda hesitant since its my gas tank. Any suggestions

No. I was assuming you had a lift. I rubbed the pinchweld with 4" backspacing full lock/compression. Even less backspacing will make it rub more.

You can remove it. Just pull the two bolts off the front, to pull the skid, then replace the two bolts up front. If you don't, your gas tank will only be held up with the rear strap and 1 bolt. Not a good idea.

Alternatively....just fine two bolts and replace the missing ones in the rear. No welding, no muss, no fuss.
