I read a few that already have said that the rear tires wear faster due to them being the drive wheel, well X how ever many. I just rotated my tires myself, it was due, and I noticed that my rear tread was more worn down than my fronts. I have Nittos and they seem to be a slightly softer rubber. So maybe Toyota does recommend that, but OP, they should of told you

I used to work at Canadian Tire which is a very well known chain of shops across Canada. They do auto service and sell everything from food, to tv's to radiators. Kind of like your Walmart superstores. Anyway... When I worked there, all I did was oil changes, tire rotations, tire repairs and mount and install tires. I was at the bottom of the chain there and I can still say whether its a Chev, Ford, Nissan, Toyota or anything, front or rear drive the drive wheels wear quicker.

Now some confusion we may have here is when I'm talking about tire wear, I'm only referring to the Tread Depths. When were talking about the front tires cupping or getting feathered then yes the fronts can go way quicker then the rears and that is another reason it is very important to rotate your tires.

Thanks for the tip about marking the oil filter and one wheel. My truck goes to the dealer thursday for the first toyota care 5000 mile service.

correct, one doesn't have to buy...

but, the dealer is not going to remove it. (he's sure as heck not going to replace the etched glass), so...if you want that particular truck you can negotiate the overall price, but Toyotaguard/Toyotacare stays.

my 2010 had the basic 25K mike service and 2 oil changes. I never took it in and traded it with over 25K miles...the dealer put new tires on it and "Toyota Certified" it.

my 2012 has the Elite package, 25K service, 3 oil changes, the etched glass, and some paint & fabric protectant gimmic...and some kind of call in "personal asistant" deal. (I wonder if she does windows? :D)

don't care how you slice it...Toyota is forcing this on most of their buyers. And they have sucessfully marketed it so people actually think it's something special. It's not.

I've tested this on Michelins proving ground in South Carolina. I would much rather have worn tires on the front axle, regardless of drive axle. If you rotate your tires on time, or buy them in sets of 4 it's a non issue. If you tested it I'm sure your opinions would change.

My rears consistently wear faster than the fronts.

Additionally it's put on your form cause it's just a clicky checkbox thing on the computer. What is says is "We checked the tires to see if they needed rotating and they don't." However the only box to say they did that is "Rotated Tires".

It's a CYA thing to say, yes, we looked at your tires.

they "said" we went to the moon.... ;-)

    http://www.hark.com/clips/whwqxhkgbx-think-they-really-went-to-the-moon

range rover did the same thing to me (under warranty) - they said they rotated but didn't

when i questioned them they played dumb and said they were going to when i brought i back in for the water pump recall once the part is in. Needless to say they did rotate when i brought i back in and noted it AGAIN on the new service invoice.

    It's laziness...

I think it's wrote that way on the form for a reason. Most tire companies request you get them rotated every 5,000 miles for even wear. Let's face it...the dealership was just too lazy to do the work.
By that line of thinking if the box says we changed your oil & filter what it really means is they checked the level and it looked good so we didn't feel the need to change it?

    Well, that explains it.
Crappy tire is THE WORST shop to give access to your car to, because they are completely incompetent. I've had them change tires about... TWO TIMES (different stores), first time, they didn't even FINGER TIGHT the lug nuts, nuts only had the threads started. Went about 20 feet and the wheels wobbled back and forth.

Second time they FINGER TIGHTENED the lug nuts, 20 km down the road (which thankfully was a rural road with very very little traffic), driver's side front wheel decided to take a trip independent of the truck.

I absolutely would NEVER go back to one of their stores for any kind of service. I do continue to buy tires there, but I WILL NOT allow them to touch my vehicle. I mount my own.

Front tires get more wear than rear on ANY vehicle, regardless of front or rear wheel drive. Front wheels are responsible for BRAKING and STEERING. Back wheels just drive straight, much much less braking is done by the rear wheels.

The ONLY exception to this is EXTREME load bearing, and morons who do tire "burn outs" with the back wheels.

Always ALWAYS put the good wheels on the FRONT. You need to be able to stop. PERIOD.

I just had my 16,000km service done and they told me straight out that they didn't rotate the tires, i dont really care that much as i will be getting new tires soon. I dunno, my truck handles just fine.

So then, how do the tire companies get away with denying the tread wear coverage unless you can prove the tires were rotated regularly? Wait, I'll answer that, the tread mileage claims are just a deceptive sales gimmick and not worth the paper they're written on...

Toyota of Olympia told me the exact same thing but they verbally told me while they were doing the service. I didn't expect them to rotate the tires since I purchased the tires at Discount and I have them rotate the tires so it was a non issue for me.

Well i went to firestone and they did the same thing except they werent smart enough to use that story. they said sorry and rotated them. I have friends in shops and a lot are f*cked up. So all i can say is be careful or if you have the time do it yourself.

A good reason why I rarely rotate tires. I either wear em and replace all 4, or trade the truck anyway.

    Think about it...
If you have nice wheels, they are worth more than a set of tires...and it seems rare that any shop can mount a set w/o FUBAR your wheels

Ya Crappy Tire is.. crappy but hey it got my foot in the door and now I'm at a stealership which I love. I love going to work everyday and at CTC, I hated my job. LOFR(Lube Oil Filter Rotate) after LOFR after LOFR all day long.

I was talking about tread depths as I stated before. Front tires always get cupped and feathered. Its nothing old. It happens less and more on different vehicles. So in that sence yes they can wear quicker.

I'm one of those customers you speak of. Took my truck in for the 5000 mile service (here in town, I went to another city to buy it) today and I could not have been happier with everything, from the time I made the appointment online, until I left, 40 mintues after getting there. Service area was spotless, well-lit, very organized. The service writer told me he hoped that after my 25,000 miles (or whatever it is) worth of toyotacare was over, I'd continue to patronize them. If this keeps up, I surely will.

I'm retired now. I've done the shade-tree mechanic thing, sometimes because I enjoyed it, other times because it was what I could afford. I'm content to pay a bit more for factory trained work and genuine parts.

Anyway, just wanted to report that this tacoma owner is happy with both the dealer I purchased it from and this dealership today. Although after only a few months and 5,000 miles and one service appointment, this isn't saying everything.

Asked about the supercharger while I was there. Interesting.

i hear you maan. i took my wife's honda odyssey to the dealership for some recall work. and the service advisor told me i needed new front brake pads. i told the guy that i do the brake job my self and left at that. i went to rockauto.com to order a new set of pads and rotors, about a week or so later decided to change them and to my surprise when i took the pads off they had over i would say 70% of the pad left. i was pissed, spend my money on the pads and rotor when i didn't need them. put back the original pad. i will replace it later on when i need them.

I had the exact same thing happen to me at my 5k service. I marked one of the front tires and when I came out after the service, low and behold the tire had never been rotated. I got a hold of the service manager, who was very apologetic. They rotated the tires the next day and gave me a free tank of gas.

I didn't know Ronald Reagan was Russian?

Trust, but verify is a form of advice given which recommends that while a source of information might be considered reliable, one should perform additional research to verify that such information is accurate, or trustworthy. The term was a signature phrase adopted and made famous by U.S. president Ronald Reagan. Reagan frequently used it when discussing U.S. relations with the Soviet Union.
