Along with mileage and color of oil. Sometime it needs replacing before two years are up==again-- not really. Only takes a second to save many dollars-time and trouble.

Funny responses! I check all the time. I don't drive much except long road trips to hunt. I went 2500 miles since jan. I will put another 3000 in the next two months. Gotta check the stick when you drive so infrequently.

I noticed my trip gauge had 2400 on one and 107xx on another. One I had reset a month or two back to track my feel usage, so the other one made me think. The only thing I could think of was that I reset it for changing oil, but really? That made me wonder even more, so I rummaged thru my glove compartment till I found that little piece of cardboard that I got from my last oil filter that you can fill out and sure enough, its been about 8 months and shy of 11k miles of no changing oil. Its my first time I let it get past 10k, but I remember I didnt change it for 8k right after it hit 100k miles. I already had the filter and oil, so I did change it the next day.
I really dont check my oil often. If im hauling a large load, towing a trailer or know im going far from home for an extended period of time...I do check my oil sometimes.

Being a prior Subie owner I check my oil all the time, whether I am in my '94 5.0 or in my wife's 2012 Acura...I don't check it at every fill up or anything anal but I def check it at least once a month. And I always check all fluids before I drive more than 200 miles.

sorry just realized this is a 2nd gen thread... :(
anyway, at 170K miles i probly check once or twice a month and have never lost, burnt or otherwise needed to add much in the way of extra oil. I am a little OCD about checking tire pressure however to acheive the best ride quality to mpg ratio. If it matters I used a couple bottles of Lucas oil stabilizer after the first few oil changes when I got the truck.

I check the oil, tire pressure (including spare), and give it a general inspection about once a month. (I have found many nails and screws in tires this way, avoiding inconvenience and possibly a dangerous situation). It has never lost any oil over the 5k miles between changes which is almost strange in itself. But you never know when something on the road might bang the drain plug or a gasket start leaking or an engine part get worn and start burning oil or some other weird thing happen to cause a leak or other loss of oil. Cheap insurance, plus it's smart to be familiar with what's under the hood, what it does, and how to use it. My 2006 2.7 has 81k on the odometer and runs perfectly, I'd like to keep it that way for a long time.

Wife's Rav4 is the same way... doesn't leak and doesn't smoke, but it burns maybe a quart every 8k or so.

Smoke on startup is leaking valve seals allowing the oil to puddle on the back of the valves. First crank it gets sucked into the engine and smokes.

Worn rings won't do this. Bad enough and it'll smoke all the time, but it will consume oil long before that point.

Yep, that light comes on every now and then, but its right next to the airbag warning light and it doesnt bother me. Every now and then I remember to turn it off, but it seems to pop on before I know it.

It pops on every 5000 miles.

At about 4500 miles, it will flash a few times when you first start the truck as a reminder that you need to THINK ABOUT changing your oil.
At 5000 miles, it comes on solid to let you know that the time for thinking about it is over.

yes sir...but it isnt that hard to put on 15-30k a year. I didnt hit 30k a year with any of my cars, but ive done 12k miles in 7 months and that was with me having 1 or 2 other cars to drive.
My truck has 140k miles and was bought on this island. Most of the miles are from me within the last 3 or 4 years I had this truck.

It's 220 miles around the island on the interstate.
30k/year is 80 miles every day.

I can see it if you live on one side of the island and work on the other.

For a few years I used to drive 36miles to work, 36 miles back..but of course I dont just go straight home. Yeah, 80 miles a day may seem like a lot, but theres people who do hit the 30k miles a year mark. When I got my Tacoma I barely drove it to work..most of the miles are from the past couple years.
My dads Titan, bought brand new in dec 04, has 150 or 160k last time I checked...and he mostly just drives to work but its his only truck. Its very possible. Theres 300k n above 1st gen taco/3rd gen 4runners on this island.. Ive owned a couple of em that had over 200k. Its very possible.
