If i went with an off the shelf bed rack, it'd be what you have. a neighbor of mine in VA had one and it was very solid and versitile.

 

Since we are on the subject of my truck, I was considering removing my nabs for the trip. Pointless? What do you guys think?

 

couldn't hurt. the frame sits well below the bottom of the body, so if you high center, your frame will take the impact. only way you'll catch the bottom of your door sil is if you are severly off camper or slide sideways into something. at that point, you'll have busted your steps anyway.

my friend wheeled with his steps, and bent one way up. ruined his step, and took 3 of us jumping on it to get it down to the point that he could open his door again.

Thats kinda why i was considering it, they arent designed like sliders and if i do anything extreme enough to hit them i dont want to damage them. Though a coworker did recommend that i leave them on and if needed i can remove them on site, only 5 12mm bolts. But then again, if they "needed" to be removed it would be too late by then.

i'd still say take them off beforehand. if they were just the top tube, sure, but with the step hoops, they are low enough that if you were to unexpectedly high-center, the frame is no longer the only thing taking a hit.

if you hit them, you could lose a step and damage the body. without them, that same obstacle may not do any damage, or worst case scenario, you damage your body no worse than with the steps. either way, you come out better with no steps. also, if you take them off on the trail, then they are bouncing around, strapped down in your bed, probably getting all scraped up.

Looks i just added 1 more "to do" to my list for this week.

 

I have to give my truck its other eye back (light) and install a CB...maybe even give it its semiannual wash

 

I am swapping headlight assemblies, removing my nfabs, adjusting my HID's (again), mounting my shovel (hopefully), and will wait to see what other things pop up in the next day few days.
