I'm looking at them and I'm sure will have a ton of questions (if you don't mind). The first few that come to mind are:

    1) What was your deciding factory between the Scion and the Subaru?
    2) How tiny is the backseat? Is it big enough for a kids car seat one day?
    3) How is the winter traction in inclement weather?

    1) Availability, I got it when they first came out and Subaru had wait lists while Scion was first come, I have had my FR-S for 3.5 months now, I would probably still be waiting for a BRZ. You should be able to find either one now.

The cars are basically identical with the only difference being the suspension tuning. Supposedly the FR-S is tuned to be more apt for oversteer when pushed to make it more "fun", i.e. you can slide the rear end out easier. The BRZ is tuned to be more likely to understeer, I guess so it is more "stable" for hard racing.

Other than that with a Scion you get no trim levels, just a base model with accessories you can add on like fog lights or a spoiler (however very few are available yet). The Subaru has the base model and a step up one that has fog lights, leather interior, heated seats, spoiler, auto climate control, and maybe some other things I can't remember off the top of my head.

One thing I would note though (as I have been following potential issues on a forum for the cars) is customer service. There are a number of people (141 on the forum I'm on) that have gotten a troubling CEL issue that by my guess is still being troubleshooted by Toyota/Subaru. From what I have read of people's accounts of trying to get it fixed Toyota is doing a much better job of handling customer service in these cases. On the other hand you have an engine that Toyota techs are rather unfamiliar with vs. Subaru techs who know their way around a boxer.

Side note: I wouldn't be concerned about the CEL issue, like I said there's 141 people on the forum saying they have it out of 8000+ cars sold. Obviously not everyone with the issue signs on the forum but even if it's four times that many people that's still only 5% of cars that have it.

    2) The seat itself isn't all that tiny, but the legroom is virtually non-existant. I'm 6' tall, I keep the drivers seat one notch from all the way slide back and there is about 1/2 inch between the back of my seat and the front of the rear seat. That said, it can be done (not sure how fun it is getting them in and out though):

    3) No idea, it's not winter yet. :D I would guess not bad if you get decent tires. It has stability control and traction control so if you leave those on and get good winter tires it will probably do just fine. Personally I'm probably going to drive the truck to work once the salt hits the roads though so it doesn't ruin the paint.

Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. I actually like the look of Scion better in the front. It's a little more aggressive looking than the Subaru.

Pretty sure no one is buying a rear wheel drive sports car for snow driving. IMO you are totally missing the point of the car, the people it was marketed/designed for, and why people are buy it.

You want awd get another model....like the 5 Subaru currently offers in awd.

But snow driving is a factor all nj drivers must consider. I believe mike asked about inclement weather conditions and how this vehicle handled it :)

    This. VVVV

The entire point of this car is that it is a rear wheel drive 2 door sports car. Hell FR-S even stands for Front engine, Rear drive - Sport and BRZ stands for Boxer engine, Rear drive, Zenith (meaning high end or something). When I was shopping for a car I specifically was looking for 2 door rear wheel drive cars, nothing else was considered. Well maybe a WRX for a bit but that was too sedan-ish for me.

Sure, and if it's a year round daily for someone in this area it may leave you stranded when a big snow storm hits if you have no other means of transportation. I don't believe Toyota/Subaru gave 2 shits about that when they designed the car though.

Rear wheel drive only, sucks in snow.

I think I need to un-sub from this thread for a while.
