Impressive HP from 4.0L

I love my truck. It's the first one I've actually paid off and will own until it dies which won't be any time soon. I can pull away from traffic with ease. I live 5 miles from work so I fill up maybe 3 times a month. I can haul/tow anything I'll ever need to. It's safe for the family. It looks bad ass.

Comparing it to an engine that came out 30 years ago is stupid.

Oh believe me Taco tires spin, the whole truck spins too. I beat on mine the first week I got it. I've gave it a rest since then lol

 

With the newer traction control systems, they don't.

 

Even with the VSC off, my auto wouldn't spin the factory size tires without power breaking it. I'm running 33's with 4.88 gears now and it is still the same. Well, unless I am turning left or right from a 4 way stop and punch it while turning then it will spin the inside tire pretty good, but it stops spinning as soon as I am straight again.

 

Consider: the Lexus LS400 was making 280 hp from its 4.0L V8 two decades ago, without VVTi. By 1998, the same engine in the GS400 trim was making 300 hp and 310 lb-ft.

 

Mine only spins when the pavement is wet, not moist but wet. And a all four burn out is impossible on pavement, at least from my experience.

 

At what RPM? You can get 190hp from a 1 liter engine at 13,000 RPM. I could care less about anything above 3,000

 

Try driving with the OEM Dunlops for a while! If I'm on freshly wet grooved pavement I can break 'em free in third just goosing the gas a bit, and I have had both light up with a rough shift to fourth, it scares me every time... speedo will jump a good 15 mph before the cluster lights up like a christmas tree and the throttle limiter kicks in.

The truck still brakes fine in those conditions though, unless it's a super panic stop, so I blame it largely on weight distribution.

I always thought the 4.0L felt like the old 302 v8 F150 I used to drive, just with extra RPM to play with. That motor was rated 185 hp, 270 lb-ft, and redlined at 4400. It twisted the frame a bit too.

I can be just idling around in a parking lot for example and punch it, turn the wheel and I'm sideways all day long. Truck loves doing donuts. I only did that twice, get hard on it ya know. Also burnouts, she will hold a burnout all day long. If I'm at a stop light turning left or right and I stand on it, she will get sideways. If I'm driving down the road, slowing down to make a turn, I can downshift into second so I'm doing about 20kmh revving at 2500-3000 rpm I can punch it and It goes right sideways and it wants to come right around.
This was with stock size Toyo Open Country M/Ts. Since then I've got new tires and I've continued to drive like a normal human being.

 

In your '05, right? Which doen't have VSC, Trac, Atrac, blah, blah, blah. Not all 2nd gens are equal.

 

Yea I don't got any of that junk. Just auto tranny.

Which is exactly why I like the overage of torque instead of the horsepower on this truck.

 

How much wood can you put in the trunk? No big deal 3 liter F1 engines make over 700HP.

 

Hey, guys...remember, horsepower can be simply calculated as RPM x torque.

I does no good to have most of your horsepower above 5k rpm, if you operate at 2,500 rpm. The reason the diesels are lower rated is that the have a lower top RPM. They have better torque at the range we normally run it.

The 4.0 in my '11 access cab has more useful power than the 318 in the 68 dodge with headers, holley, glasspacks and stage 1 intake.

Did you know that with any engine torque and horsepower are exactly equal at 5252 RPM?
Here's an interesting bit of trivia; below 5252 rpm any engine's torque number will always be higher than its horsepower number, and above 5252 rpm any engine's horsepower number will always be higher than its torque number unless it is tuned for a peak HP# above 5252 rpm's, then the inverse is true.

 

Lol, wow ^^ that's crazy. A V6 with more actual output power then an old 5.0+ (I'm too lazy to calculate it's exact cid) V8.

 

If you want to compare it to a 5.0 Mustang, try comparing them to the new 5.0L making 420hp on 87 octane gas.

 

A surprising amount. My Subie was hauling sliders and 8-ft lumber while the Taco was on jacks getting a lift installed.

Keep in mind WRX STI's power comes from turbocharging, not revving, so the torque curve is quite good, above 250 lb-ft from 3400 rpm all the way to redline:

 

Comparison with contemporary V6 used in competing trucks/SUVs:
F-150 base 3.7L V6 non-turbo: 302 hp @ 6500 rpm, 278 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm
Jeep Grand Cherokee base 3.6L V6: 290 hp, 260 lb-ft
Nissan Frontier V6: 266 hp @ 5600 rpm, 284 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm

Compared to these, the Taco's V6 is deficient in power and torque.
