No emissions was my experience, I was standing on the exhaust side as we where guiding the truck as it backed out. I didn't realize how clean it was until later when one of the guys brought his mid 80's Jeep Cherokee in to check how much old had leaked out since the day before. He had us all gaging just driving it in, it was then when I realized the Dodge was so clean.

Any idea of the cost of adblue and how much is used per gallon?

Theres still some particulate emissions, but very little. Just because you can't see or smell something doesn't mean its not there.... Gas motors put out carbon monoxide, which is colorless amd oderless- but will kill you given the right conditions. Likewise, just because you can see and smell something- like an older diesel- doesn't mean that its exceptionaly bad for you.

I've been looking at a mercedes ml350 diesel; thats why I've reserched the topic. MB says 7 gallons of adblue will last about 15k miles. The dealer charges over $30/gal for it. VW dealers sell it cheaper, and its becoming available at truck stops slowly.

30mpg vs 20mpg, longer service life, a more usable power band. Everyone else in the world uses them, but they must all be wrong about the advantages

Diesel fuel costs more, most likely resulting in simular annual fuel costs...

a Tacoma will go 200K miles if maintained properly (although I'd never own a vehicle that long)...

how much power do you need in a mid size pick-up truck?...towing The Endeavor on the weekends?

And, I'm not so sure the parts of the world that use them are for the reasons you stated?

be honest...you sure it's not for macho chest beating? I can here it now: "my truck is a real truck...it has a diesel...your gas Tacoma is no more than a Camry with an open bed" :D

I believe the fuel savings alone are worth it. Based on my experiance with the Hilux Surf, fuel economy is at least 30% better than a comparable (in overall performance) V6 gas engine. On average, diesel is nowhere close to 30% more expensive than regular unleaded. Its typically $.30 ish more, about 15% more expensive.
In addition, assuming using the latest technology, its cleaner.
Diesel motors also last much longer than their gas counterparts, and require less maintainance. I keep vehicles for years, it would be nice to know that i could get a truck and expect 500k trouble free miles.
Bottom line is that it would be more reliabe, less expensive to operate over time, and as a bonus, cleaner.

    good post...thanks

although I'd never keep a vehicle for 500K miles...I've never kept one for 50K miles. I get tired of them...

or they start falling apart. A good reason to start driving Chebbies again.

If I wanted to be macho, I would drive a F-350 with stacks. I'd just like a sensible vehicle that is available worldwide except for here.

Your right it is, that's why I drive one. IMO a diesel Tacoma would be even more sensible :)

Sign me up---oh wait it's not available in the USA.
My neighbor has a diesel Jetta he uses to commute in, for the last 10 years, 40+mpg and over 200,000 miles!
When are Americans going to wake up and embrace the things the rest of the world already uses.

    New guy here voting.

I'll dump my truck in a heart beat for one. I've been wanting a smaller truck for a while and almost bought a Taco but I was hoping for an engine change in 2013. No joy...same old V6 they have had for a while. With fuel mileage the same as I get now with no difference in price I went full size again.

I have had my eye on this one...

    http://www.jerrystexas.com/web/new/Toyota-Tacoma-2013-Granbury-TX/4673052/

I'll wait until they come out with a new motor in 2014. If they do improve things I hope they dump the rear drum brakes as well. That is another thing that I hate....

    My posts keep disappearing...

    I joined to vote...

    Not cool?

Well this post seems to be staying...

Hopefully they will come out with a diesel....I'd trade brands tomorrow.

I hope they get rid of the drum brakes as well. If they increase power, they have to increase braking power as well. Good bye drums, hello discs, diesel and hello new customer.

I really wanted to buy a 2012/2013 but I don't want 8 year old engine technology.

Do you really believe disk brakes would increase braking power?

    I sure hope not.

The V6 in these trucks are one of the best engines ever. It might be old technology, but it works. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I do however agree with you that it is time for a diesel option.
