In this NPR interview, Lisa Jackson, head of the Environmental Protection Agency gives her perspective (and her boss's) on the auto industry. From the 3:35 mark of the interview:

Jackson: The President has said — and I couldn’t agree more — that what this country needs is one single national road map that tells auto makers what kind of car it is they need to be designing and building for the American people.

NPR reporter (interrupting): Is that the role of the government though? I mean that doesn’t sound like free enterprise.

Jackson: Well, uh it , it is free enterprise in a way. Umm uhh you know, first and foremost the free enterprise system has us where we are right this second (laughs) and so some would argue that the government already has a much larger role than we might have when Henry Ford rolled the first cars off the assembly line.

Wow - even a reporter from NPR was taken aback by that statement. Can't wait to see the cars those auto experts in congress come up with - I'm sure it will be a big seller

They are lawmakers not engineers, designers, or business executives. Not even close.. But this doesn't surprise me one bit.
Maxine Waters stated a few years ago during a congressional hearing that she wanted to nationalize the American oil industry.
They (congress) ran a cafeteria for years in the capitol building. It never made a cent for them. They finally agreed to outsource it to private enterprise.
I don't think the American people really want a car designed by a politician.

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
Well, say what they will, but what Americans drive will probably be decided by foreign carmakers. Fiat will be calling the shots for Chrysler, and I imagine either an Indian or Chinese company will do so for GM. Only Ford is left as far as a viable American brand, and their head of development is from Lexus, so expect to see more lexus-like cars. Seen the upcoming Taurus? Looks like a Lexus!

You can bet that Congress will force them to make more small fuel efficient vehicles - the very type of that have sold so poorly because buyers prefer imports for that type of car. Then when they don't sell and those cars stack up on the lots the taxpayer will take the hit. Congress is also talking about raising the CAFE standards - what they are really trying to do is force American manufacturers to quit or at least cut way back on making SUV's and trucks. Nissan and Toyota will be there to take up the slack...

It's their subtle way of forcing unacceptable dogshit into the market so that everyone will be so disgusted that they just say fuck it & start riding bicycles. That way they also solve the energy crisis & the health crisis because if you wanna go somewhere you'll have to haul your own fat ass around in some sort of self propelled fashion. Fuck them, that's our decision not theirs!!!!!!!!
