Unfortunately, we didnt get our projects back... But anyway, we (there were 23 highschool contestants from around the state) were tested with a written test, OFC (cutting), GMAW (wirefeed), GTAW (tig), SMAW (stick). The whole "hands-on" part was based around a 5 page welding print. We were given a 12x12'' plate and a bag of metal pieces that had their own place. Cant say my welds were the best, except my tig :D, but what really wins competitions like this, is the ability to read the print right and place all the welds in the right place. I drew out the prints for my welding instructor, i'll see if i can get them, and scan em, then post up the pics!
