The article makes a few very good observations. I could see how this lockout could spell the end of a few fringe franchises if it is prolonged. They will simply lose their fans to other activities. That said, in the long run it is probably the best thing that could happen for the hardcore fans. The league is clearly to big for its own britches. Hopefully Gary inadvertently trims off some of the fat. It will improve the league and make him look bad a t the same time. Then perhaps we can finally flush that polished turd down the bowl hole.

Chris I agree - get rid of some of these teams that are barely surviving. However I'd be sad to see the Islanders be one of them. There's a lot of history with that franchise but Wang isn't paving for a bright future with that franchise. If Bettman is still running the league I doubt he'll get rid of expansion teams he's responsible for bringing in. He doesn't seem like the kind of human that admits defeat. In the other corner of the lockout ring, Fehr doesn't seem like the kind of guy who will give into the owners demands. If you're a player and you brought this guy in to represent you, you'd like to see what he's made of and this is the golden opportunity. Lets see what ya got Fehr. Get us a deal no matter what it takes.

At the end of the day, we're just fans. We'll buy tickets and tune into games whenever they come back. There's no other product that comes close to this league. If anyone has a voice it's gotta be the sponsors - they may have the most power to call the league and say "we have $ invested in this game, in the winter classic, etc - get the hell back on the ice now"

I too think it would be sad to see the Islanders disappear. For the same reason you pointed out.
I dont think Fehr or anyone else put in his position really stands a chance to win. Yeah sure the players are unionized, but no business owner is going to choose to operate by the demands of their employees. I know I would not. The league will take the year off if the players don't concede. Inevitably the union will break, even if it takes a whole year. I am not sure the advertisers would get involved. It would be interesting if they did. Likely though ,they will just spend their dollars where the viewers eyes have gone in the NHL's absense.

Great point! Maybe some sponsors will just back away for a few years until the league can show it can go a decade without another lockout.

Anyone hear about the focus groups? Parros tweeted this yesterday:

that is interesting. It is amazing how much attention is placed on use of the media to win the 'public relations war'. That said, it isn't exactly surprising either given the state of our superficial world.

It is already obvious that the league is to blame for their failing business model. It is also clear to me that the owners were fools to spend money they didn't have. I feel the players are in the right to be pissed. Bettman has run a shit-show. Revenues have grown, but only in some markets, not across the board. Bettman can be blamed for his uninformed expansion into the sun belt. The whole thing is a mess. The last thing the league is going to do is acknowlege their errors and allow the PA to provide the model that fixes it. Their is way too much pride and arrogance in the owners and league.

Sadly, the players will be forced to take Garys bone-job once again if they want to get back to playing. Lame, but likely the reality....imo...:D

Well in the PR war - who's winning? The players are allowed to speak not the owners so of course the players have the upper hand by using twitter, or showing up unannounced to kids' practices and getting that picture taken for the NHLPA to post online. Funny that this is happening in an election year for the U.S. - see a lot of similarities.

I agree, there is a marked similarity. It really boils down to the same strategy.

I am not sure who is winning the PR war exactly. As this goes on, I am not sure that the fans really strongly take one side or the other. They just want to see communication and resolution because they realize that everyone involved is well compensated for their jobs. The fans want hockey from their sport, not politics. The longer the PR war continues the more it simply looks like a battle of Ego.

The NHLPA has scheduled a conference call for 5 p.m. ET to discuss the offer with the players' negotiating committee and the union's executive board.

 that these idiots say yes.
