    Scott -
try something with goretex. I know that there are snowmobiling pants that have goretex patches on the knees, butt, and cuffs to help keep you dry.

A good pair of sailing pants. May be overkill compared to a packable shell but they will keep you dry. I like Gill Myself because they have awesome customer service.

:woot: Spending more money at REI
Decided on some new long underoos (REI polartec) and some new pants to replace a pair that I sort of burned while sitting at the campfire a while back
Fall sale is almost over and those are two things that I figured I "needed" most.

those look sort of like the snow pants I was thinking of. Are those lined at all or are they just a shell?

Most of these are just pants. Water proof with extra knee/butt reinforcement.

If you want lined and sailing, probably foulies.

X2 on the Gill. I have gone through 2 pairs of complete Gill foul weather gear when I lived back east and in FL. The patches are just heavier nylon for protection at wear spots. The part that makes them so good for sailing is they are completely water proof because they are rubber lined on the inside of the nylon shell.
They are pricy but well worth it. Lasts for years. As an example of how well they work, I was fishing in Rhode Island one time and we stood on big huge boulders, the surf kept coming in and hitting the boulders causing a wall of water to fall on you. Had the hood up and all you had to do was turn your back to it bend over so your facing down, the water would fall on your back and run off. Dry all day. Course I had the bib model at the time but it doesnt sound like you will be needing those.

Ski pants will get wet eventually, no way around that because you want breathability.
    Just my .02

These guys are lucky. Apparently, lost for almost a week in Glacier National Park. Found alive today.

I have to say, it makes me happy to hear they were found as I know what the park can be like this time of year.

I was reading about them. Since there's over 12" of snow in parts of the park right now I'm guessing they got lost once the snow covered their tracks/trail. This can be a tricky time of year to be out, best to be over prepared or just stay home!

They were supposed to be headed out the weekend it started to really snow so I'm guessing that's exactly what happened. I didn't hear whether they just stayed put and waited or not.

a shell with mesh on the inside for a bit more comfort. They cant be beat for waterproofing and durability. I have the waterproof pants with DOT 2 fabric. They are a bit less breatheable than the Helly hansen packable rain gear i have but they have another layer of waterproof material and i have yet to soak them through. I have spent many a race on the bow with 30knots of wind + gusts taking large amounts of green water to the face and remained dry. Where my packable hiking pants will soak through in about an hour in just the rain.
