I'd like to thank all the smokers because they're high on tax and that keeps the rest of us from paying even higher taxes.;)

Wow. I have mixed views on this- I smoke cigarettes, but I can understand the bit about multi-family homes. It would be discourteous and rather rude for me to smoke in a shared living space- unless everyone smoked, that is.

But to be honest, the government shouldn't be able to tell me what the hell I can do in my own house. Can't stand the amount of governmental intrusion I live with right now, don't want any more.

    This.

If you want to go to the bar for a few drinks you have to put up with their smoke and they just say "deal with it", as im sure the smokers in these multi family homes are saying to their neighbors as well.

What if my bad habbit was taking a shit in public walkways. "sorry but your gonna have to deal with it". See how this works?

im against all these laws but this is a tough one, the lady downstairs from me is always puffing cancer sticks in her patio and the smoke always blows right in my room through the window whenever I leave the window open and its disgusting.. I feel like shoving her face in a muffler and let her smoke on that for a while

Screw that. I don't smoke cigarets but I'm not going to tell someone else what to do in their own home so long as it isn't detrimental to others. I can understand banning it in homes where there in more than one family but how the hell would they enforce it? Say Family A smokes and Family B does not, what's to stop Family A from lighting up a cig then calling the cops on Family B if they were to ask Family A to quit and somehow it escalated to the point that Family A wanted to do something to B. It's stupid and the government should quit trying to run our lives. If they want to make the world a better place they could start by staying the fuck away from us. I need the government for Schools, Roads, Law Enforcement, Armed Forces to protect the republic, and I'm sure one or two thing that I've forgotten. Fuck all the stupid nanny laws they are trying to or have passed they do nothing but hold us back and divide us as a nation.

I don't think this should be a hard and fast law. Something along the lines of requiring building owners to clearly advertise whether or not their building is smoke-friendly would be more reasonable. Then potential tenants could decide for themselves whether or not they want to live there. A flat-out ban is over the top big brother shit. It's still private property to the building owner and the decision should be left up to them and their tenants.

Shouldn't be long before this thread gets too political to remain extant.

I'll point out that if someone is smoking in their home and the other tenants can't tell, no police will be involved. It is giving other tenants the right to keep their home from smelling like smoke.
On a similar note, I would support a law that banned smokeing in a home with minors.

who's insinuating that?... as far as anyone knows these are segregated living spaces, w/ segregated HVAC (that's been my experience anyway)...

this is "tyranny of the majority", plain and simple... oz, ...just wait until someone gets on a mission to ban watching hockey in the home, ...all that rowdy, foul-mouthed behavior is "deemed" harmful to neighbors w/in earshot in multi-family, apartment, condo dwellings... hmm? you're making the mistake of focusing on the subject matter, rather than the fundamental assault on previously held liberties..

...sounds like a hell of a way to live, ...hoping you don't get "turned in" by the neighbor - sounds eriely reminiscent of life under totalitarian regimes... not only is it an assault on individual liberties, but also on private property rights...

I think the flaw in reasoning here is that you are considering it YOUR home, if its a multi family home its not all yours

    Woot!

If I were a landlord, I'd be thrilled.

Oh, and Wiley, you should ask the mods to change the thread title so it is less misleading and alarmist.

Several years ago when I was driving OTR, I stopped in a small, independent truck stop in (IIRC) one of the Dakotas. When I walked up to the door it had a sign clearly posted which read: "Smoking is allowed in all areas of this establiishment". I thought that was outstanding! These were owner's of private property who were willing to give me the option of whether or not I wished to visit their establishment. If I chose to turn around and take my money elsewhere, then so be it. As I'm an adult and can make my own decisions without someone else telling me where I can shop or live or what I can or can't eat or whatever, I went on inside.

Like I said before, this law takes it too far. This says that landlords of private property don't have the option of having an 'all smoking' building if they so choose. If people who don't like smoke choose to take their rent money elsewhere then so be it.

Without trying to get too inflammatory here, it could be said this is nothing more than people trying to tell each other how they can and can't live. The same end result could be accomplished without forcing people who can't afford to own their own house to change their personal behavior. The referenced article even mentions how other towns have found a way to make more reasonable compromises in their laws, but not this one.

Honestly, I don't know why I'm even bothering on this one. Since division and stalwart refusal to compromise for the sake of considering everyone's rights is the name of the game in this country nowadays, then what's the point?

Fair enough. They could zone multifamily smoking land use adajcent to freeways, sewage treatment plants, and heavy industry.
