Had lunch with the jon's today

 

We're designing a "net zero" house, that can produce all of it's own power (without internal combustion generators). goal is actually to be able to output so much power that it will actually pruduce too much, and feed back into the power grid. then, instead of the monthly power bill, you will actually get a check from the power company each month. after designing it and crunching all the numbers to prove that it will work, we are building a sample portion of it to display at an engineering showcase in May. the sponsorship money goes into R&D, and then to materials to build the sample portion.

aw, so you're not interested in never paying for a power bill again?

oh and the other criteria is that we have to design it so that the extra cost of the fancy electrical stuff will pay for itsself in a 10 year span, meaning that after 10 years, you actually make money off of your house.

 

Not me I love the smell of a coal fired power plant or a the puff's of gray smoke from a nuke as I fire up the A/C,.. That green shit is 100 years out if then....

 

we're actually not trying to be green. some of the stuff we are using is actually pretty ungreen. we're doing this for economic purposes. you're correct that people don't want to spend extra money yet jsut to be "green". i'd agree that that's about 100 years out, if not more. this is for people who have the ability to spend a little more cash up front, in order to save/make even more in the long therm (after 10 years of ownership). we've found that it's also a very attractive market for the kind of people who want to be able to sustain themselves without having to rely on outside power supply.
