I use a Nikon D5100 and the lens for those shots was a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. The pictures were edited with Camera Raw to really make the colors pop.

It would be great wouldn't it if we had some clear definitions as to what makes a rig an "expo rig" or what makes a rig a mid-travel" rig or what makes a rig a... you fill in the blank. :D

We could then say, "no, your rig is not an expo rig because it doesn't have this or it doesn't have that".

    My answer to you is:

In the end, it doesn't matter really. It is your rig and you can mod it however you want and you can categorize it however you want.

Take these with a grain of salt. But it's a good start to explain what you are asking. Most of us are nothing more than weekend wheelers that enjoy nothing more than vehicle camping. Very few of our trips and or trucks qualify as "expeditions" or "expedition vehicles."

There's no universally agreed upon diffinition of what overlanding is, or what an expedition vehicle is made up of. here are some videos of one form of expeditioning.
I wheel with some of the guys in the below videos when i'm up north. Dana, the owner of Lucky 8, and his wife organize a expedition once a year. every year, they go up to canada and spend 2 weeks without contact with pavement or any kind of civilization. sometimes they are blazing new trails, and only make it 2-4 miles in an entire day. the challenges are not only the terrain, but physically and mentally sustaining yourself and passengers for the two weeks (or whatever the duration of your trip is).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMwe5K0JYOk

Dana, the owner/organizer is the guy in the orange hat at the 1:00 mark.

"expedition overland" is also something woth googling. they are a small group with some very high quality videos. they are on the other side of the spectrum of the lucky 8 guys, as in the terrain they travel is not nearly as challenging, and they focus much more on the exploring, scenery, and camping aspects.

sorry, wasn't sure what you did or didn't know already when asking the question.

i haven't seen the more recent episodes either. the guys in the movies seem to be very inexperienced wheelers, and seem to come from an outdoorsman and backpacking background as opposed to an automotive/offroad background. when i watched them, i watched for the scenery and cinematography (their strengths). the "wheeling" portions are great to introduce people to the hobby, but that seems to be about it.

The Xoverland guys are more about showcasing gear/equipment and exploration. They are definitely great at the cinematography and presentation of it. Clay Croft (owner) is a great guy. They are outdoorsmen/and experienced with backcountry travel, but they are not hardcore wheelers. That's not who they are targeting anyway so they don't need to be.

To me its the rig that takes you to the remote place of your choice for an extended period of time and gets you home safely.

    Tacomas FTW!

X2. Clay is a VERY experienced outdoorsman and actually quite an experienced driver too. He has been in Russia with the Fsomething or other expedition crew for the last few weeks. He is also a great video guy.

But as Adam said, they are more about inspiring people i think to get out and just enjoy it. Not about wheeling to break stuff. They just want to have a good time with what they have.

I still enjoy the movies they make for that reason. Makes me want to get out even more!

I feel I have an expedition capable right with all my newly aquired tools, spare parts, and enough survival gear to live out of my truck for at least a couple months. of course it isnt nearly done! I think it is 50% truck and 50% driver. If your a whiney little bitch then it doesntmatter how nice of a truck or what you have inside of it. You wont last outside civilization for long.
