stiff brakes

I've only had my '09 taco for 3 days. My biggest complaint is the brakes. They have very little feel and get rock hard. The truck stops with no issues, but they just feel terrible. I have very little feedback from them. Is there anything i can do to change this?

 

I have the same issue on my 09 Tacoma. Toyota says its normal but doesn't feel normal to me. Have you gotten any answers?

 

Alost of people have had "mushy" brakes since day one. My self included.

You cannot tell me this is supposed to be normal. Feels like no brake assist, i.e. power brakes, very stiff.

I feel the same - mush brakes. I'm thinking a set of stainlees braided lines are in order.

I have a 2013 DC TRD OR and my brakes feel the same way. They feel like they only travel two inches and I'm stopped. Also about half way through the pressing of the pedal the front brakes seem to bite really hard and make the front of the truck lunge forward. Now I've gotten use to that happening so I've been able to compensate but anyone new that drives my truck absolutely hates the brakes.

 

My 2011 also has a stiff break - the way I like it. My 2014 4Runner is deep and doesn't want to stop unless yu press deep enough.

 

I upgraded a month or two ago to some slotted and drilled rotors with ebc green stuff brake pads. The difference is amazing.

 

Makes sense that the OR's are saying they have stiff pedals and the non ORs are saying mushy. Two completely different booster systems. The one for the OR has controls for the ATrac and whatnot and is a much larger unit. For whatever reason, this booster system has a much firmer feel than the regular one, hence mushy in some trucks and stiff in others. It was tough for me to get used to the pedal feel on my '11 OR after coming from my first gen.

 

I also have a 2014 OR with brakes that can send you through the wind shield if you don't have on your seatbelt.

My 09 OR has stiff brakes that don't do much unless you really get at it. Driving my friend's 13 SR5 feels waaay better IMO. I guess it's more mushy, but definitely feels more linear in stopping force.

 

mine has a very stiff pedal. Kinda feels like no power assist.

 

For what it is worth, my 2006 DC 4x4 brakes starting feeling really mushy around 60k miles. Turns out the rear drums were way out of adjustment. After manually adjusting them, the brakes on my truck feel great now. I wish I had adjusted them years ago.

I don't have experience on the newer Tacoma, so I'm not sure how their brakes compare.

 

The exact opposite. My brakes were not grabby at all. There was no feel what so ever in the pedal and it was very stiff. My brakes are now much more grabby abd my pedal has a much better feel.

 

If it feels stiff for more than 4 hours seek medical attention.....lol

OffRoad brakes are definitely not LINEAR at all. They seem to go from 20% to 80% braking with nothing in between. I agree with you, the Tacomas that are not OffRoad are WAY better.
