i won't argue with that  i grew up on my dad's .270 and it's never failed me, but for graduation we were looking at what i wanted and we boiled the decision down to .308 and 30-06. in the end i decided that i didn't need the extra oomph of the 30-06, and i love my .308. i can't wait to take my first deer with it.

Ever been to the mountains in central PA? Mountain laurel is over your head so you're not seeing very far. And you usually get to see 1 or 2 jumps and they're gone.

it certainly is a popular caliber, lots of people swear by it. i wasn't really looking for much power at distance though, because i hunt in TN/GA and the longest shot i've taken was about 125 yards. heck, we kill deer each year with the 30-30, and some people say that its not a good hunting round... :notsure:

My first rifle was a model 94 Winchester. Sold it but bought another a few years ago. It doesn't leave the house though. I take it out about twice a year to shoot it but it goes back to the cabinet soon thereafter. Still has open sights and has never had a scope mounted on it. I'll probably keep it that way.

My 30-06 is a 7600 carbine synthetic matte black barrel. I thrash it through the brush pretty hard and it takes it. No expensive scope or anything. It's my hunting rifle for in the thick stuff

Nope sure haven't man, and I wasn't knocking you for not shooting past 50 yards. I know your guys layout is way different than our open clear cuts down here.

this is my first rifle that's truly mine. its a browning x-bolt medallion, .308. I got a Leopold VX-II scope to go on it. I don't plan on this being a show gun, either. It's gonna go with me in the woods, and I plan on using it until the day I die (or until i decide to start hunting with something else, like a bow or muzzleloader).

hell yeah it is  . My granddaddy bought a .308 styre bolt action at some gun show for like 600 bucks a few years ago. I was shooting a browning semiautomatic .308, and I got tired of it jamming, so I asked him if he had anything I could switch to and he pulled it out of the gun case and I don't think Ill ever shoot anything else.

I love my VX-L bought it from a local guy hurting for money. Leupold is hard to beat, I bought one of the new Redfields for my muzzle loader and have been pretty impressed for the cost. I mean it is Leupold glass not the quality of my VX-L but still has the lifetime warranty.

Yeah I know you weren't. I couldn't hunt open timber. I wouldn't know how to. The deer here have a huge advantage with the laurel and brush.
