Hilux diesel engine FTW! I almost tried to bring one over a while ago. Hmm. Meh. Maybe another time. Just get one out of south America. ;)

Personally, I'm rather surprised at the results so far (it's only been a few days). When you look at other pickups with a diesel engine option (Ford F-150, RAM 1500, etc), not all that many (certainly not the majority) are running diesel engines. Of course, I suspect Toyota is looking at those numbers (vehicles sold), not poll results in forums like this. This poll is just for our gratification - an opportunity for discussion. I wouldn't put much more into it than that.

I would say the majority, with the exception of Chevy/GMC, of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks in my area are diesels. Diesel is also readily available as it can be found at almost any gas station. I would like to see a break down by region, that would be interesting.

Oh, I'm sure that's true, Kirk. Those people (towing RV's, construction equipment, etc) are looking for pure pulling power over nearly all else. However, as far as I know, Toyota doesn't have a 3/4 or 1-ton truck available in the USA. Thus, my comment referred to pickups a bit closer to our own.

Ah once again my reading comprehension fails me  I thought you were referring to the # of deisel vs. gasser in a specific model, not heavy duty vs. half ton.

Someone here was talking thermodynamics. Figured I'd chime in with a little bit about why diesel makes me fap.

diesel has 11% more energy per unit of volume than gas

    higher thermal efficiency than gas
    21-28% vs 32-38%

higher compression and thus combustion and thus more power than gas

    8:1 - 12:1 130-150 PSI vs 16:1 - 23:1 400-800 PSI

no pre-ignition ^ compresses only air, fuel injected right before TDC

longer stroke and burn time (more torque and higher efficiency)

yes there are downsides as well, but I'll let Christian fap over those.
