According to my GPS my speedometer was more accurate with the 265/75/16 than the 265/70/16 stockers. Others have reported the same.

Not a dumb question. It will make a difference. There is a tire size calculator in the wheels and tires section that helped me out with all that. of course, with factory tires my speedo is not the same as my gps.

    Agreed,
Not a dumb question and yes tire size vs speedometer does make a difference, but as was said before it actually made my speedometer more accurate as well.

I went from a 265/65/17 (stock Bridgestones) to a 265/70/17 (Duratracs). According to my GPS, with the stock 265/65/17's, I was travelling 59 mph when my speedo said 60 mph. With the 265/70/17's, GPS says I'm travelling 61 mph when my speedo says 60 mph. Diameter of the 265/65/17's according to Tire Rack was 30.6". Diameter of the 265/70/17 Duratracs according to Tire Rack was 31.7". This is roughly an increase in overall diameter of 3.6%. Based upon my GPS, I increased 2 mph according to my speedo which would equate to 3.33% (2/60), pretty much right in line with the change in tire diameter.

When I calculate my fuel mileage now, I add 3.6% to my mileage (i.e., if I drive 100 miles, I use 103.6 miles in my calculation). Taking this difference into account, I lost roughly 1/2 mpg with the larger heavier tires. I also have new wheels that are just slightly heavier than the stock 17" Sport wheels.

Hope this helps with your decision. :)

My 07 TRD with the same size tires as yours went from the speedo reading 2 or 3 high to being right on the money when I put on 265/70/17s on. Tread thickness may have been part of the reason, because I bought it used with probably half or less of the tread still remaining. The 70s were a little cheaper than other sizes as well. The tire place said this was because it's one of the more common sizes.

contrary to the prevailing thought on here, i'm getting rub after installing 265/70/17 tires on my stock 2011 4WD double cab Sport model! all the reading i have done on here, says i should be fine with a "1 up" tire size on a stock set up. so i went with some General Grabber AT2s (which i love!) on black Pro Comp 17" alloys. the alloys are 8" wide, which is only a half inch wider than the stock 17's, so shouldn't make a difference. the rubbing is occurring at the front leading edge of the tire, on the inside edge of front wheel well... and it is only occurring when backing up and cutting the wheel at the same time. the rub is minor, its just barely hitting the plastic at the bottom inside edge of the front wheel well. i figure it will probably go away as the tire wears a little. (the wheels have the correct back spacing too, 4.5", i believe.)

any thoughts, theories, or similar experience??

PS... i also purchased a 2" level kit when i got my new wheels and tires, but i decided not to install it because i was only going "1 up" on the tire size and didn't want to mess with the factory suspension. Now I'm thinking with the unexpected rub, i might have to go and install it anyway. Its the popular "strut spacer" style level kit. 1" aluminum spacers/risers, which go on the top of the front struts, and supposed to add about 2" lift. got them on eBAy, from Supreme Suspensions.

Are you sure the wheels are 4.5" backspacing? The issue you describe makes me think they might have less BS than that.

Either way I bet you could alleviate that rubbing with 5 minutes and box cutter.

I would really recommend the spacer kit but that's an aside.

thanks! yea, i was just talking to someone about backspacing and he said the same thing. Yes, the wheels i ordered are 4.5" backspacing, that's what it said on their website anyway (4wheelparts.com>ProComp 5001 wheel>17x8). Unless they sent me the wrong ones, but i dont see any other option in a 17x8. i'm going to give them a call and check on that!

Re the leveling kit: do you think doing only the 2" up front would make my truck look "front end high"?? (the spacers for the 2" lift are actually only 1" thick)

2" up front should leave you very slightly nose-high. Be careful not to articulate the suspension too much with those spacers, they can damage the ball joints at full droop, and can bottom of the shock at full compression.

so check this out KPT, i just had the place that did the install pull the boxes that the wheels came in out of their dumpster, and they say 17x9 on them!! those guys at 4wheelparts sent me the wrong wheels!! the 17x9s have a 4.75" backspace, with a -6 mm offset, so might that explain my problem?? (the 17x8s that i actually ordered have 4.5" backspace with NO offset)

RE the level kit: i hear what you are saying and that's what i was worried about too.

Chalk up another one for 4wp

Yep the 17x9's will stick out an inch further and are the only time I've heard of 265's rubbing. Also make sure that the tires you have are even approved for 9" wide wheels. It will say so on the tire manufacturers website.

guy at the garage was a knuckle head, the boxes said 17X8, not 9. he read it wrong, so apologies to 4WP... they sent the right wheel after all. as it turns out though, i figured out why i'm getting the rubbing (i think). when people are saying you can run 265/70s no problem (without rubbing), more specifically, they mean on the STOCK wheel. the new wheels i put on have 4.5" BS, but when i measured one of the stock rims (eyeballing it with a tape measure) they look to have about 6" BS, which allows them to sit in further. this is why the 265/70 will clear the inside fender edge on the STOCK rim. the 4.5" BS, while looks good, sits out just that much further that it creates the rubbing problem at full steer.

also, i put the 2" spacer kit up front, and you were right.... it did leave my truck sitting slightly nose high.... and the tires still rub a bit. dammit

I know this tire size might be a bit controversial. But a 255/85r16 WILL fit on the stock suspension... I have a 06 access cab trd offroad. Non-tbs leaf packs. (First owner did not have them replace unfortunetly.)
I just installed 255/85r16 (33.3x10r16) bfg km1s (brand new) on the factory 16" aluminum wheels. I removed the front mud flaps. And trimmed 2 little areas. Bottom corner of the fender flair closest to the doors. And the drain holes on the plastic inner fender well guard. You have to be under the truck or specifically lolking for the trimmed areas to notice them. that's how small they are. Only the slightest rub at full lock and full stuff. I did nothing to the rears and have no issues. Just thought I would add my 2cents.

I have an 05 trd sport crew cab 6ft bed,had 265/65/17 and went to 275/60/17 they look beefier no rubbing at all.but down side is with the addition of air intake, exhaust and toneoue cover for improved fuel milage which did work until the tire change.Killed my mpg by about 2 mpg,and speedo is off by 5 mph @ 60mph.No rubbing at all.(anyone want to buy a set of slightly used 275/60/17s !!?)Kinda stinks all for nothing,.
