I'm about to reformat, wish me luck!
I'm sure in about 15 mins I'll be cursing myself because I forgot to save something important.

wait...try just reinstalling windows into a different directory. that way your old data is still accessible via explorer

I hate... I mean have.. windows vista. I don't have an OS disc, so I don't know how to do that.

I pulled 11gb of songs, vids and pics and stored them on an external drive, I backed up my bookmarks and made a list of all the programs I'll need to download again.. which is less than 10.
So I think I'll be ok with a reformat, what do you think?

right. You don't have to format. You can actually just reinstall over the old version of windows.

But if you do format, I would also make an OS partition. For a copy of vista, I suggest you familiarize yourself with utorrent and www.mininova.org

For my bookmarks, since I have about 5 different computers that get used, I use a program called xmarks. I love it. It syncs/backs up all my bookmarks between all the computers.

Make a list of your programs and make sure you have the install media handy. Also, if you use iTunes (I hate it, but have an iPhone), back up your entire iTunes/Music directory. Then after the reinstall, copy it back over and when you reinstall iTunes, it will find all your old settings, playlists, etc.

Make a list of all usernames and passwords needed for various things - your broadband router, email logins, forum info, etc. This and email are 2 things I hear about most when people rebuild their computers and forget something (I'm a tech guy who has been supporting Microsoft products for 14 years and hear my share of horror stories).

    Ensure your backup includes:
    1. Pictures (aka "snapshot in time" - and can never be reproduced if lost)
    2. Documents
    3. Email (if you use Outlook, use the export feature and export everything)
    4. Misc Media (audio/video, etc.)
    5. Program settings
    6. Bookmarks/Favorites

Then, before you do the reinstall - test your backups since you are doing a data destructive approach. Plug your external drive into another comp and make sure you can see what you put there.

After that, just prepare hours of reinstall/patching. Reinstall your programs and copy your backups back over.

One other tip: Do not allow your computer to connect to the internet to patch, update or surf. The first step on the internet should be AntiVirus and Anti-Malware installation/updating. Then patch, then it's OK to play.

You've got vista?? I say you sacrifice some small rodents...or is it reptiles to the likeness Bill Gates (but in a loin cloth of golden microchips)...and then do a rain dance on a remote mtn top in Nepal and it should fix you right up!!

(Yup...I'm not a fan of Microsoft.)

    Computer Aids prevention/cleaning:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (Install ahead of time so it's there if you need it)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html (use with SpybotSD to passively inoculate your computer - run once a month to update the inoculation)
http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html (see note for spywareblaster above)
http://www.ccleaner.com/ (AKA "Crap Cleaner". Adjust settings to your needs. The single best tool for maintenance on a PC. Wipes temp files like a MoFo)
Grab the standalone version of http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis and drop it in the Windows directory. That way, it's there if you need it too (you can run it anytime by just typing hijackthis in the search box on the start menu).

for A/V - use a free solution like AntiVir or Avira (I avoid AVG as they aren't always in tune with what works best).
If you insist on Paying - go with Kaspersky or Nod32 (I use Nod32 for our company).
If you're a geek and like to play with your AV - ClamWin works well too.

I did that two weeks ago, my computer was infected with virut/win32 virus, heres the story:

I had my AVG license expired a couple of months ago, when AVG stopped working, virut started to make trouble, infected my CMD, then some important dlls, then started to infect my programs .exe, fortunately I have 3 physical drives, first one has 2 partitions on which are c:\ windows and f:\ where i download stuff,. i have a d: where i have all my work files and a external h:\ where i have all my backups and stuff, so i just have to format c: and i keep all my files without needing to backup stuff...
