Any D700 users in here want to comment about the camera? I want to move to FF and don't really need video. On my DX body, I mainly shot with primes and have recently got into using older Nikon manual focus lenses. I don't upgrade too often so I want to make sure this is the right camera for me.

I might be purchasing a used one with around 80k on the shutter. Is $950 a good deal?

$950 is too good a deal with 80k on it. I think market price is around $1500the for used. Try to look into refurbs. At least you'd get a short warranty.

Try it out, if it seems legit, pull the trigger. I love mine. I paid $2200 just before they got discontinued, but I wanted new.

Thanks, I am going to take a look at it today. Sounds legit as the seller is a studio photographer who recently upgraded to the D800 and now the D700 is just taking up space so he is selling cheap for a quick sale.

for $950, I would expect the body to be abused a bit, scuffed up, but if it is in good working order, I'd take it. bring your own memory card, lenses, etc. make sure the hotshoe works as well

I'm setting up for a night shot of the C-130... large pano print. The ramp here has a lot of mercury vapor lights. I can't turn them off so I was going to stage my background with them out of the picture, however the light will still be painting the foreground a bit. I plan on using a bit of creative lighting with the flash. I know I should still be concerned with the mix of light temperatures.... is there any way I might be able to alleviate some of the issues with the warmer mercury lights?

I just thought....maybe I can use a filter on my flash. I guess that might be a solution, I'll probably be popping it off at 100% power due to distance.

I don't know yet. It'll be a toss up between my 50mm or my 18-135 kit lens. Probably the kit lens because I don't think I can keep consistency for what I'm trying to do if I pan a few shots instead of cropping one.

I would say use the 50mm, but with your zoom, all the way to the 135mm end, there won't be any barrel distortion for sure. just tripod it, EVERYTHING manual on camera. but you'll have to take a ton of pics and stitch it. at least if you are on a tripod, you could use a longer shutter speed and keep iso 100

I ended up going at 135mm a couple nights ago...made 5 shots wide. Unfortunately I was still fighting the ramp lights in the back ground so I took half the stitch and mirrored it. Can't tell except for the background...which I'm gonna try and mask out and maybe replace. This is proving to be difficult because I'm using GIMP right now and I can't find the tools I'm used to in Photoshop.

I used Hugin to merge it. Did a pretty decent job once I figured it out.

I officially hate gimp. It just ruined two hours of work on this thing when the levels plugin crashed in the middle of it rendering preview and left me with a half rendered line across the middle of my photo. Thank god I save progress every once in awhile because I couldn't undo the action... was stupid. So this preview is nowhere near done, I still have to play with the colors a little more and bring out the contrast. I will also crop a little tighter. If you look you can still see the line where I mirrored it. This is the biggest piece of progress that I lost when GIMP screwed up. So I have to redo it, just not tonight, also have to desat the orange highlights from the mercury lights. You get the idea though. I'm gonna keep the mirrored background I think. Its kinda cool, and it will be subtle since I'm keeping it plenty dark. This will be cropped and printed for a 36 x 10 frame.
